There’s already an existing thread discussing to expand the gesture support on the mobile Plex clients. While not mentioned in the OP, the thread also mentions swiping left/right to fast forward/rewind (or tapping the left/right side of the video to achieve the same).
Please comment/vote in that thread in order to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes. Unless I’m missing some unique aspect of your suggestion I’ll close this thread as a duplicate.

Please consider adding gesture support when playing a movie on the device or using the iphone/ipad as a remote.   I often find myself struggling to hit the play/pause buttons when in a hurry.   I've seen gestures successfully implemented in a number of other ios app. This is what I was thinking for Plex:   Gestures would work anywhere on the screen, either on top the playing video, or over the cover art when using device as a remote.
