Mobile Clients - Gesture support during video playback // MOD: e.g. play/pause, volume, brightness, skip

Please consider adding gesture support when playing a movie on the device or using the iphone/ipad as a remote.

I often find myself struggling to hit the play/pause buttons when in a hurry.

I've seen gestures successfully implemented in a number of other ios app. This is what I was thinking for Plex:

Gestures would work anywhere on the screen, either on top the playing video, or over the cover art when using device as a remote. Old controls would still work as is.

Keep it simple, with one option to turn gestures on/off in the settings.

skip: one finger left/right

play/pause: tap two fingers

volume: one finger up/down

Simple and easy to do when you are concentrating on a movie and you need to answer the phone.

I'm surprised this request hasn't come up before, but I wasn't able to find a related thread. Please let me know if I missed it.

Don't forget to 'Like this' post  ;)

I agree about adding gesture support. VLC Streamer (http://hobbyistsoftw...lcstreamer-more) nails gesture support. They have configurable one and two finger scrubbing, volume, play/pause, and others. You've probably seen it, but check it out if not.

I just setup Plex about a week ago. Although Plex is a much better product overall, coming here from VLC Streamer was a *major* disappointment regarding the in-playback experience. So, I guess only about 99% of the time :) (ok you got me, only when I want to skip forward/back or pause or something - fair enough)

I like JonBule's idea about partitioning the screen. And I really like the idea about being able to use gestures on iOS as a remote.

I would suggest making the gestures configurable and start out with something like the following:

== Inputs ==

one finger swipe (for each of: left, right, up, down) (consider one for each: left, middle, right third of screen)

two finger swipe (for each of: left, right, up, down) (consider one for each: left, middle, right third of screen)

one finger double tap (one finger single tap should probably stay fixed to HUD)

two finger tap

== Actions ==

brightness up (set to: 1%, 2%, 3%, 5%, 10%)

brightness down (set to: 1%, 2%, 3%, 5%, 10%)

volume up (set to: 1%, 2%, 3%, 5%, 10%)

volume down (set to: 1%, 2%, 3%, 5%, 10%)

skip backward (set to: 5s, 10s, 30s, 1m, 5m, 10m)

skip forward (set to: 5s, 10s, 30s, 1m, 5m, 10m)

play/pause toggle

At a minimum, the one finger variants, volume, skip, and play/pause should be supported. While I'm at it, it would be nice if PHT right/left arrow key could be configured with differenc time intervals - I really dislike the defaults.

Thanks and I look forward to gesture support in Plex iOS (and other clients).

I don't think the Plex developpers would let us configure the settings if they implement this. If you look at the current settings, they don't let us get too granular.

Yeah, what you've laid out for simple few second skip, play/pause, and volume up/down would very welcome. I hope to see it sometime soon.

would love this idea...

I would like this feature in android. A few of the android video players support 3 simple gestures:

Up/down on the left side of the screen controls brightness.

Up/down on the right side of the screen controls volume.

Swipe left/right on the bottom of the screen seeks forward and backwards along a time line.

Yeah, I think that is what VLC on IOS does. Would be great to have something similar on Plex. For me it remains the weakest link. For the last 6 months I've been all out with Plex at home, but when I travel for a certain amount of time, I still copy movies to VLC because the playback experience, for me, is more fluid.

Another good example of gesture support is in Android’s MX Player. I’ve never used Infuse player on iOS, but I’ve heard it has great gesture support as well.

Just incorporate gestures like the Infuse app. I almost prefer watching videos on that app now versus the clunky to use Plex.

Yeah, it is getting clunky for simple video playback when streaming from server…

But having gestures when using as a remote would be sweet as well.

This is I think the biggest feature I miss in the plex apps. It’s mainly why I stay with Infuse for my default iOS video player. If Plex would implement this feature I would switch.

Seriously – the video playing user experience in Infuse app on iOS is superior. Volume control, scrub and screen brightness are so easy to control. Please add this to the Plex app.

Boast. I’m surprise so few people want this. It works so well in other applications. Maybe with this new forum software this will get more visibility. Please Plex devs.

Only bumping this as it appears more recent requests for the feature are merged to this one, so just adding my vote whether or not it leads to anything :slightly_smiling_face:

Gesture controls like swiping for skip, chapter, volume, brightness are in all the players like nPlayer, Netflix, Infuse etc but it would be nice to have them in the Plex iOS client being my preferred player for PMS.

Also there is press & hold for fast foward(2x or 3x playback speed) in some apps.

Yes please

Sad to see to something so simple hasn’t been implemented after 8 years from my OP…

I agree with this suggestion! Today’s plex player is so difficult to use without gestures that I usually use infuse!
I want to support gestures, such as double-clicking to pause and play, swiping up and down to adjust brightness and volume, and swiping left and right to fast forward and rewind. There is also the function of multiple playback. This is important!

Double thumbs up!

It’s almost ten years…
