Feature idea: Trailer lookup

This is just an idea, if its already be stated in forums and deemed not worth the effort, no problem just an idea (not all ideas are worthwhile ones).

Trailer clip lookup in the context of you are browsing shows (primarily Plex source vs home-library but suppose it could be for all) and though plex provides metadata which is really cool, an evolution would be to be able to lookup a trailer clip.

thats as far as my solutioning goes, idk if it should look to youtube or other. Just saying itd be cool, i usually have to jump out of plex to go lookup a trailer on youtube, possibly other sources may be available.

thanks for listening. moderators do with this as you want i just wanted to express the idea. I like plex for the most part, when it work as intended, its pretty great. sometimes files dont get matched or one runs into issues but hey, all apps have their problems. Thank you

Plex Documentation → Cinema Trailers, Extras, & Related Albums

Plex already provides trailers when you search for a movie, whether or not the movie is on your server, on watch.plex.tv, or has yet to be released.

Example: Plex Web screenshot.

o sweet, i do see trailers like in your screenshot for Plex TV sourced content. For my library stuff i’m not seeing trailers… maybe i have a setting turned off. Well thats fine, the feature is already there and i just missed it, thanks FordGuy61 for pointing it out!

That’s a Plex Pass feature.

T’would be nice to be able to search - say - youtube for a trailer for a show/movie that I have that Plex does not pull a trailer for, and select the youtube vid as my trailer for the show/movie. Similar to posters, it’d be data stored in the server database, so I don’t have to “pollute” my movies folder with a trailer file for every single movie.

I’ve had to manually do this for some anime. Plex is bad at trailering anime, even if I am okay with a non-english trailer.

I actually thought the OP was asking for this functionality in the post, and now it makes me want to pull (or upload) trailers for my media to my server.

Believe it or not: the videos on YouTube, particularly commercial movies and their trailers, are still the subject of copyright.
YouTube has a contract with the owners of these videos, how they are going to be used. That contract is very likely not mentioning the right to take a video and embed it into a commercial product (read: “Plex”).
In other words: that will never fly, if enabled by a feature within Plex. It would bear the risk for Plex of getting sued into oblivion.

Most people call this “local trailers and extras”. It’s a feature, not a bug.
One benefit is the trailer that plays when you click the “play trailer” button on your client is your choice. Like the original theatrical trailer ripped from your blu-ray instead of some ransom commercial for a DVD release from 20 years ago.

Thanks. I missed that when reading the support article.
