I take it those 2 suggestions actually address the same issue / pain point?
While the suggestion linked below was created earlier, this one has approx. 2x the votes. I wonder if it makes sense to merge those 2 threads to combine your votes/comments?! ā however I might be misreading something about those suggestions.
Yes, both posts address the same issue. But this post from @Danielpt, if Iām understanding correctly, only proposes that Plex automatically selects the āgreyā (blended grey I suppose) for HDR content.
My other post suggests a darker gray option or maybe even a slider for choosing colors. Opacity control would be great too.
Both requests combined would be:
Darker subtitle color options.
Opacity control.
Remembering different options for HDR and SDR, so if I choose 30% gray for HDR and then go play SDR content, I donāt have to go change the color again to a brighter option because itās too dark.
Both suggestions are indeed similar : they both refer to the brightness of the subtitles being much too high for HDR content.
The āgreyā option that currently exists for subtitles is indeed grey, but it is still much too bright, as anyone with an HDR display would be able to confirm.
A simple solution would be to add an opacity option, like the option currently available on Amazon Prime Videos. That way, the opacity of the subtitles could be reduced to say 50%, thus making it much more watchable.
The above post from rsilves sounds good to me, with the 3 different options he proposed.
Vaguely haunted grey color option on android client does decent job. It can still be bright during darker sceneā¦but outside of dynamically changing the color of the subtitle based on the scene (probably no efficient way to implement), Iām not smart enough to even think of a solution that can remedy the issue. Itās not terribly bad. So Iām mostly content with the new color option.
But it would be great if we can set it separately so that I can have something that I can see better when viewing SDR contents since vaguely haunted grey does look a tad too dim in SDR and harder to read.
I think opacity option should be offered regardless of HDR or SDR. After that we could either
Have two completely separate subtitle color settings for SDR and HDR.
OR
Add an HDR playback-specific opacity setting. Plex would apply this opacity setting when detecting HDR playback.
This seems like a very easy thing for Plex to implement that would be of huge benefit to everyone who watches both SDR and HDR content with subtitles on.
Not only Plex but all streaming services should have separate settings for HDR and SDR content. Come on Plex, lead the way with this amazing quality of life update.
HDR content and OLED TVās is becoming more and more common, but it has a major flaw for those of us who need to use subtitles: brightness. White subtitles shines with the force of a thousand suns with HDR on OLED, and makes it quite uncomfortable to watch.
I request that we can configure the color of text based subtitles. Gray is adequate.
Please, give the option to change subtitles color on the LG TV app. The white color is not good, the yellow one being known as the best for subtitles viewing. Itās a thing so simple, present on any popular player, I donāt know why Plex still doesnāt have it.
Plex on tvOS has subtitles that show at full brightness when viewing HDR content. It would be nice if there were options in Plex to control the brightness for these subtitles, or Plex could just automatically ādo the right thingā (whatever that might be) when it detects its displaying HDR content.
Currently, the only real workaround is to set subtitles to 50% transparency in the global Apple TV settings. This means constantly changing them as you switch between viewing HDR content in Plex, and all other content. Viewing Dolby Vision or HDR content outside of Plex (eg. Disney+, Apple TV+) does not exhibit this issue and 50% transparency is too dim there.
This is all ādirect playā content with text subtitles included in the source file. No transcoding or burning of subtitles into the video is being performed.
There are multiple similar posts on this subject for other platforms, I apologise if I missed an existing one for Apple TV.
But Iām afraid it doesnāt get revised because not enough people request it, would be good If every appletv user that uses subtitles comment to get this resolved.
Why isnāt there a luminance control for the PGS subtitle?
If Panasonic UB820 has that feature so your player should has it.
The PGS subtitle is very bright on a HDR content.
This feature should be on all devices.

It seems that the graphics brightness is not correct in HDR mode. It should be 100nits when āwhiteā and not the full hdr brightness.
Also when the screen saver kicks in while in HDR mode. The white Plex logo is too bright also.
We know some miniLED TVs set the brightness to max while streaming Dolby Vision content and white subtitles just burn your eyes because of that. And if you set a color like dark grey it looks fine but then it looks awful in SDR content.
Having a setting to set the color of the subtitle based on the type SDR/HDR (or even detecting its Dolby Vision) would be sooo welcome. Please vote it up guys!
