Subtitles with the AppleTV 4k rendered WRONG

Hello everyone

I want to bring some attention to the way subtitles are presented in the AppleTV 4k with the latest introduced player, which seems to have issues respecting some of the preference of the subtitles (SRT subtitles), example:

Old player:

here It respects the subtitles preferences from the system settings

New player:

has problems, no matter what settings you have it displays this way

It happens on all of my 3 AppleTV 4k.

I would also want to add that depending on the aspect ratio of the video, the subtitles change in size:

If I set Medium size it will be good for a 16:9 movie, but too small on 1.85:1
If I set subtitle size Big, it will be good on 1.85:1 but too big on 16:9.

The position of the subtitles also changes in relation to the video, it will be great if subtitles can stay on bottom regardless of the video aspect ratio

Also…

Old player seems to present subtitles a little less bright when a HDR video is played which is great for the eye, while new player presents them in full brightness which most of the time is too bright for the eye or interfering with the image processing of the TV.

Let me know if I can provide more info to help!

Thank you

oh c’mon please don’t ignore this issue Plex devs

I also wish this was solved. I’ve seen multiple posts about this, I keep hoping someday it will be fixed, but I think it’s been a year since I’ve been waiting.
Probably just too “low priority” for the devs. Who knows if/when they’ll solve this.

I also have this issue on the new Apple TV 4k (2021). Initially I thought it may be something that affected just the newer model but then after some digging I’ve found this post and it appears to be already present in the previous one too :/.

Also, I couldn’t find a way to make the plex player to apply the custom styles that may be contained inside the .srt subtitles file.

Can we expect these issues to be fixed in the future please?

I guess there is also a lot of users that use subtitles. It would be great to heard something from Plex about this.

thank you

I would like to pay for plexpass, but there are always some issues stopping me. When something is fixed finally, something else is broken with the fix.

Now I can choose:

  • old player (should be used in case of compatibility issues) - unfortunately transcoding many videos instead of direct play
  • new player - direct play is fixed, but subtitles are broken

OMG

This doesn’t seem to be fixed anytime soon. I’m a heavy user of subtitles and only this prevented me to use Plex basically.
I’m into infuse now. I like Plex more so that’s really sad :frowning:

Another update was rolled out right now and this problem wasn’t fixed. No mod/admin answered this topic at all. They’re literally ignoring it. Sad.

This is not a new issue, and yes they are ignoring us, it just seems the developers don’t use subtitles at all, and don’t understand how important that feature is, for all the other Plex Pass users out there

Steve, a Plex employ a few posts above did reply, and said they are aware of the issue.

Yes I’m aware of that, but this issue it’s not new it’s not the first topic about it and honestly is frustrating that they are releasing new “features” that are useless when the basic stuff ( you know, the text to be able to watch a movie) is broken
