[ Feature Request ] - Allow users to use custom media name

This is an old topic but still very actual as far as I’m concerned.
PLEX forces users to follow a specific naming convention to allow the title match function to work. Fair enough.

Why can’t we instead have an e.g. Server setting where we can specify a regular expression to pick up titles according to the user preference?
I use folder names as follow:

Englis title (optional - original title) [year]
and this doesn’t work in Plex

other users might/will have a different naming convention.
I am really uneasy going renaming all my media because it did work for many years with minidlna, it’s proven, simply it’s natural to me, so keen not to change anything.
I just think this regular expression potential solution should be very easy to implement and would make lots of users happy.

my 2 cents

Apologies but this the default answer I always get on this forum about this topic: rename your media.
I’m not willing to rename my media I’d rather change software.
Pleas no misunderstanding here, I love Plex I just think it’s 1 step away from being perfect for my needs.
This thread is not a support request but rather a feature request.

I strongly disagree on the point where PLEX can’t do more, in fact this is already done it’s just not customizable.
As a user I would like (but that’s me) Plex to understand me and not me to understand Plex.

I don’t have any problem with conventions, go and define one and use it in Plex (done).
But let the user define it’s own if needed (missing).
With a regular-expression I’m happy to tell PLEX where to look in my personal naming convention to get the precise name to be used by the scanner.

I can barely imagine the number of posts on the forum from people that will have issues with the naming conventions they created themselves… This kind of freedom can be nice for someone, but overall is a source of complexity and disaster (and I’m saying this being a fan of MediaMonkey and its “auto organize” features, so I’m not new on creating naming conventions)

Not sure if this helps but I sometimes add additional to the file names such as the original title or the title given for a country. Examples include(but not all)…

Born to the West (1937) {aka Hell Town}
Death Feud (1987) {aka Savage Harbor}
Penthouse North (2013) {aka Blindsided}
Blood Lake (2014) [720p] {aka Lamprey}

Plex matched every single movies automatically for me. I didn’t have to make any manual changes.

That’s what I was going to suggest too, I actually do something similar but with “” instead of “{ }”. AFAIK Plex is instructed to ignore everything that is in square parentheses and I use it to diversify different rips or to add useful (for me, not for plex) information to the filename

I would just like to weigh in on this and also agree plex should have a .ini file or a section to allow user to stipulate their naming convention. I use Sonarr to organise my TV Shows and Radarr to handle my Movies. Now I too have a very large library of TV Shows including 100% back up and it have to make a change to my current folder structure on all my shows and their backs up will take days!!! All I need is to remove the space between “Season 01” and make it “Season01” etc and I would be good.
I should add the only reason why I need to do this is I have just added a DVR where now Plex does not naming and when I add the series to Sonarr it wants to rename the folders etc. Prior to the DVR Plex was very happy using the folder structure of Sonarr :slight_smile:
