I love Plex and I love that I can share my library with my friends and family.
At the moment my server is a Intel Core 2 Duo setup that is capable of transcoding only one 1080p stream at a time. Since I´m sharing my library with a few different people who watches movies on different devices, from Ipads to SmartTV´s I had to find a way to deliver content to them without overloading my system.
I ended up almost recoding all movies and putting them into a seperate library called Streaming Movies and Streaming Kids. I know that Plex is capable of handeling different qualities of the same movie but the user trying to play the movie has to choose which quality they want. I would much rather have Plex transcode wathever folder i choose and then be able to choose: For this external user you should always send the transcoded movie. Furthermore it would be nice if only transcoded material was shown to the external user.
So to Recap:
1.) Have Plex always transcode content if selected for the library.
2.) Be able to tell plex to only show the transcoded content to all external users or specific users.
3.) Tell plex within what hours it should transcode content (eg: 00:00-05:00)
4.) Bonus: you should yourself be able to choose the transcoded version if you want to sync to a device
