I saw a remark under the Plex Music Goes to Eleven! blog post that mentioned useful features to add for classical music and the poster was encouraged to create a post about it. Since no one seems to have created a post about this, I am starting one. If there is already one that I missed, please direct me to it.
Here are features I would find useful:
Composers
Vocalists
Soloists
Conductors
Orchestra/Ensemble
Period (Baroque, Classical, Impressionist etc)
For tracks:
Major work (eg Symphony No 9, Bergamasque)
Piece (eg 1st Movement, Claire de Lune)
Key
Opus or other identifying number
Does anyone have anything else to add or any comments about the above?
I am havingthe same problem. My boss has a HUGE collection of music that can not be tagged as its home recordings, recordings from session tapes and archive material and we dont have a way to add the metadata beyond artist and album. We really love this product but need more features and function.
Does anyone know if that is coming? MR. PLEX... will you be coming out with an update soon?
Me too! I have a huge library that needs to be re-organized because modern music players don’t get it right. A KB or guideline would be appreciated : )
I would love any of this, but the biggest improvement would be a “composer” tag that could be added to the view/sort options and carried over automatically from the user’s tag when processing from the home server. As it stands, I personally tag my classical collection with album artist as the performer and artist as the composer. However, Plex seems to interpret it in the reverse, and takes album artist as artist and makes artist into track artist, which is not a view/sort option. So my classical music library appears to be full of orchestras and soloists, and no composers. Which is unclear, hard to browse, and doesn’t look great at all.
Plex people don’t even react to those posts (there are several about the composer tag). When they announced their music update and I realised Plex is still unusable for classical music, I felt deceived.
I know it’s free, but come on. This can’t be so hard to implement, it’s just a tag!
Almost all music can be thought of as either Pop or Classical, so these requirements for Classical is so so important. I think the first priority is a filtered entry for composer. Then second to that is Conductor, Orchestra, Soloist, etc, but where do you draw the line! Perhaps a generic requirement to add customise tags to filter on would be a better and more general solution. Then another general improvement (for all music) would be to support two or more “artists” per album (e.g. Paul McCartney and Wings with Artist details for both, or Composer=Beethoven, Conductor=Karajan, Soloist=… and so on).
PLEX - Please add support for Classical Music (or better use of Tags)
Agreed with the general sentiment expressed in the thread, and the post above specifically. Right now, PLEX is unfortunately nearly unusable for classical music.
Agree with the sentiments above - would love a single environment for video + music, but Plex music is simply so bad at handling classical music it’s a non starter. As much as I hate iTunes, it flattens Plex music in this regard.
Seems that classical music lovers is a too small community to be heard by Plex and other competitors. Though supporting classical music could be a unique selling point! At least supporting composers for filtering, sorting and search imho would do half the job.
Having proper classical tagging would make all the difference in the world to me. I have a massive collection, and while the Musicbrainz Picard community is pretty good at helping me organize the recordings (though not perfect), playback is still tedious. I’d love it if I could organize and play them all back properly with Plex.
