After building a very complex regular playlist for the MCU, Star Trek, and Star Wars cinematic and television universes I found that watching these playlists is quite problematic without using the Plex Media Player since it will show you which entry in a playlist has been unwatched vs. watched.
The dynamic/custom/smart playlists allow the use of an unwatched type filter. This option should be available in the regular playlists to allow ease of progression through. I loved watching the Battlestar Galactica smart playlist that had this feature.
I hope this sounds appealling to others as well. Fingers crossed on more additions to funcitionality with playlists.
