Ability to send non-plex users a 1 time pass to watch an individual item on my Plex server.
Reason:
It's quite a nuisance to set up a user with their own Plex account, Plex software, Share permissions, configuring the software, all to simply watch a movie (or for me to demo Plex)
Original Post:
I've got a large family that I share my content with, and I've noticed it's a bit of a drag to set up some one with their own account, software, share permissions, etc ...
I was wondering if we could get a feature where I could simply pick a movie/song/episode(or season) from my library and generate a guest link.
This link would allow the user who gets it, to watch the specific item (possibly a limited number of times, but this is not necessary) and that is all. On a special "reduced version" of PlexWeb Without any full access to the server.
There are a couple of situations with colleagues of mine, whom I'd like to offer them a movie to watch, but not necessarily my entire collection, clogging up my bandwidth.
If this makes sense, wondering if this could become a possibility.
I don't see this as being a feature that would be widely used. A work around would be to create on plex account we will call it 'guest', then create a library to a folder on your HDD and only put in copies of what you want them to watch, then delete when done.
I have 16 people with access to my server and never feel a bog on my network at all. I have 50 Mb down and 10 up. Quad core with 4GB of RAM 3.5 TB, Windows 8.1, I use it both for the server and run Plex for windows 8 on it without issue, along with a book library that has outside access, and a few other things running constantly. The most I have had streaming at once was 5. So unless everyone of your family is addicted to watching Movies and TV I don't think it would really bog you down.
I love this.....Even though I hate the "Dropbox" similarity
But when said....this would imply a huge development for the Plex team, since you are requesting a "simplified" PlexWeb
So before pressing the "Like This" button, I think it would make more sense for strangers not using Plex to have a download link instead to a PMS generated zip containing media, and all related stuff in a single zip, and with the contents of that zip have the individual items renamed from like agent downloaded srt file to match the actual media, or?
And SIGH....Scratching this, since that's almost as big a work as your suggestion....
So....Outcome.....
Love the idea, and will press the like button after Plex passes V1.0.x, since there's so much with higher priority, IMHO
MODS: Need a button named "Like, but not just yet" :D

What is the specs of your system?
It's not so much to tie up my resources, but more so for the latter reasons. Like offering users momentary access to my server, or quickly granting them access to something specific. There have been a couple of situations where I'd like to offer people a movie to watch (I.E Hey, can you get me such-and-such movie)? It's easier to simply provide them a link to my content, without having to give them full access.
Maybe this is just me being lazy, but I've noticed this a few times, where I wish I had this option.
My server is a QNAP TS-870 Pro

Oddly enough, Dropbox is where I got the idea from.
I'm not sure I follow your revised suggestion. Are you implying that instead of a Custom Mini PlexWeb player that would simply play the content, that the user would get an EXE/Zip that contained a pre-configure PHT client that played the software?
That is an interesting concept. If when you create a link it would create a lightweight player that just runs does not install, sets the stream and plays the movie, then for say the next 24 hrs they could run the downloaded program and it would pick up right where they left off. Like a tempory user in the PMS. But it seems that seems a little excessive, having it open a plex web player only for the said period for the only item linked and creating a temp user would work just fine also.
But as I said I don't see this being widely used, just tell everyone if they want access to your stuff to get off their lazy butts and set up and account and you will share to them. If they don't want to then they can get the content themselves.

That they would download a zip file with the media, fan arts and an nfo generated by PMS.

That is going into the realm of copyright infringment. And also that is a big upload and download for some people. I think the concept of temporary access is a good idea, but will not be widely used and so then it would be a feature that would be very far down the list.

Guess you are right here, but streaming it or downloading it should size wise be the same
I would skip all the metadata stuff. The link should go straight to a second web client that is just the player. This could use a special token that is temporary and exclusive tot his second web client and would not allow access to any other portions of PMS.
In addition to this, I think it would be great to have the ability to show someone your library, but not have them able to view any content. Only to browse the Meta data.
I also think it would be great share a one-time link with a set start time (and perhaps end time or duration (e.g., 30 seconds), but it wouldn't be required). This way I could share a favorite joke or scene with friends.
Granted...nowadays most clips I might want to share are probably already available as a gif or on YouTube...but still, sometimes it would be fun.
I came to the forum to see if anyone had already written a request for this feature. I would love to see this! Especially if you could also add a timestamp to the link. There are many times i want to show a friend a scene of a tv show or movie so i have to hope someone uploaded it to youtube. It would be so nice to pull up my content, seek to where the scene starts and "copy public link" and paste to a friend. If the timestamp thing is too much, just the ability to link would be fine, I can always just tell them to seek to 23m:45s :)
