[Feature Request] Improving Sort methods and options for Libraries

I think could be useful have the possibility to combine multiple sorting options, making them follow a sorting priority, and more advanced type of sorting for files in library.

I’m thinking about the “series of films”, Films which have trilogy or more ( Matrix, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, etc…) where the Name of the sequels does not contain a sequential number: sorting them by “Title only” could not sort them correctly in the library: with Matrix Triolgy it will work cause the films are named “Matrix”, “Matrix Reloaded” and “Matrix Revoltion”, so the sequence is respected even using the alphabetic order only, but if you think about Harry Potter we have:

1 . Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)
2 . Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
3 . Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
4 . Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
5 . Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
6 . Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
7 . Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 (2010)
8 . Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (2011)

so simple alphabetic sort will return 2 - 7 - 8 - 4 - 6 -5 - 1 ( so bad )

Sorting by “Date only” will affect all the files inside the library so this is not good too ( because I want to keep them ordered by Title anyway ).

One solution could be Sort by Title AND Date…but this is not enough, what we really need is to be able to sort by Part of The Title AND Date..

What do you thing about this?
Thanks and best regards!

Isn’t that what we got a sort title for?

Title Sort Title
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey The Hobbit 1
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug The Hobbit 2
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies The Hobbit 3

Not saying more sophisticated sorting won’t be a value add… just wondering if the available sort title function might already cover your specific use case

You might as well consider creating a collection for all HP movies. Set it to display only the collection poster inline.
Then sort only this collection after release date.

@OttoKerner what to say…you’re right!

Even i didn’t want to use collection I see this is the best way to keep the libraries clean and ordered.

I also noticed only now what @tom80H has suggested…when you edit an entry there is an option called “Sort Title” where you can manipulate the Title as you wish due to place that single file ordered as you want…so… even if you don’t want to use collection you can sort every file in any order you need.

I think all I wrote up here is totally useless :sweat_smile::sweat_smile:
I’m sorry I bothered you all for this!

I disagree… there are some use cases for what you described… e.g. if you want to sort your videos by rating (1-5 stars) and as that’s quite vague afterwards by critic rating or duration or release date…
IF that’s something, somebody is missing

Allowing regex in the search box would fix this and many other sorting problems.

how? this feature suggestion isn’t even about the search function…

You’re right, I think I accidentally posted in the wrong topic. Sorry about that.

I agree, Collections clutter up the movie library. (especially the automatic generation of collections.) . Very Much in favor of a two factor sort as mentioned above, especially in the Music library: Sort . albums by artist and then year.

2021 clean-up: implemented (collections, sort title)
