[Feature Request] Mark episodes as watched automatically per user, or have a favorite shows setting

As a long time Plex Pass user, I love the features of the app, especially separate users as it allows for separate “watched” items for individuals in my household. I’ve got a big family (wife, 4 girls and mother-in-law all living with me) and it makes things quite easy.

As for my feature request, let me lay out a use case; my wife, oldest daughter, and mother in law have favorite shows they like to watch (Grey’s Anatomy, Bachelor, etc.), and I have some of my own (Star Trek Discovery, Inhumans, Gifted, etc). When they log into their plex accounts on my server, and set the view of their TV Shows section to “Unwatched” so that they can see which shows they need to catch up on, ALL unwatched shows, including those that they don’t even watch show up there. It’s easy enough to mark shows they don’t ever watch as already watched, but it’s time consuming to do so, and I think there could be a better way.

The feature that I think would be most helpful would be to be able to mark certain TV shows automatically as watched. That way my wife could select Star Trek as watched automatically and it wouldn’t show up in her unwatched list, and I could mark the Bachelor as watched automatically and it wouldn’t show up in my unwatched list.

Another possibility would be to have a “favorite” shows setting per TV Show, and then be able to filter by both “unwatched” and “favorite”.

Plex Web already allows for marking an entire show as “Watched”, but you’re asking for all new content added to a show to automatically be marked? I can’t say I agree with that suggestion.

My recommendation -
Start with “On Deck” as a starting point.
This would allow to view the list of shows (or even movies if they’ve started any) they’ve watched and still have more to view. On Deck list only fills once they’ve started watching a show or movie, and shows current if not completed, or for TV, the next episode once previous is completed.

One way you can potentially do your “favourite shows” idea already is to use the Collections tag like follows:

For each show you want to mark as a favourite:

  1. Edit show
  2. Click on Tags
  3. Add a collection of “Name’s Favourites”.
  4. Click Save

Then to view unwatched shows from your favourites:

  1. Click on All > Collection > “Name’s Favourites” in the TV Shows library to filter by your favourites.
  2. Click on By Title > Unwatched to switch to the unwatched view.

That actually works pretty well, and pretty much exactly what I was looking for. A little complicated for the users in the house, but I think with training it will work.
