[Feature Request] Persistent Subtitles Settings

New here so let me know if there’s some formatting or rules about this I don’t know.

Plex already does this with video quality: when I select a quality and finish a TV Show episode the next episode begins with the same quality as the previous. However subtitles settings go back to the default, which is off. If I watch a foreign language show with subtitles I need to reactivate them every time the episode changes. I would also be happy with an option to make the default setting for subtitles on. It seems like subtitles are generally detected or labeled as a particular language so a default language selection for the subtitles should be reasonable.

You could just rename your subtitles with the *.forced tag and set your default preference to show subs only when foreign audio is present.

As long as your files are appropriately tagged with language information, this is possible.

What is not possible currently, is to have several languages automatically picked (and a defined order which to select first).

Can anyone comment on my situation? I was about to make this exact same Feature Request, but then I found this. However, the accepted answer does not help me. My main goal is to get my Anime to use the selected audio options persistently as I allow the episodes to auto-play. Currently, this does not happen, even I’ve got everything setup as I describe below:

I want to always watch my Anime in Japanese audio with full English subs by default.

My preferred language is be set to English, and I already have it set as such. I also have my Preferred Subtitle Language set to English as well, and I have my Auto Select Subtitle mode set to “Shown with Foreign Audio”. Note, I want my account level language settings to prefer English audio, with Subs automatically set accordingly.

In my episode and movie files, I manually remux all of my media to have all of the tracks labeled, with the English track in first place, Japanese in second. I then make sure the Full English subs are the 1st sub track, while the Forced English subs (foreign audio type) are the 2nd, with the forced flag set. In Anime, forced tracks are typically used to translate on-screen text messages, building signs, etc. that are naturally animated as Japanese text.

With my current settings, Plex handles this VERY well! When I choose English audio, the Forced track is played to ensure I have subs present for on-screen Japanese text. When I manually select Japanese audio before starting an episode or a movie, Plex automatically displays the Full English subs, and I LOVE this! However, when an episode ends, auto-play does NOT keep these settings. I have to exit the current episode and manually set the audio language of the next. This is extremely annoying.

Is there a solution to this? I don’t want to change my Preferred Audio Language to Japanese, as this could affect other shows besides Anime. Granted, those other shows won’t always have Japanese audio, but if they do, I will then just have the same problem in reverse for those shows.

There is no other solution than to open the web app,
then go to the preplay screen of every episode and
pre-select the desired audio and subtitle tracks.
These track selections will then be stored for your plex user account.

I know, it is tiresome but that is currently all what’s possible if you don’t want to switch your default language.
