I am so in love with Plex and Plexamp it’s hard to put in words but there is one feature that is needed to make it a truly best in class music application.
The playlist creation process in Plexamp is so clunky that I have almost entirely switched to listening to albums, which has had its share of virtues but I am starting to miss the joys of playlist creation. Ever since I started listening to digital files on iTunes in grade school all the way through Spotify, the playlist creation process has had a few key features.
The easiest to point out, and I imagine the easiest to implement in Plexamp is the ability to go through a list of tracks and select many at a time before moving them into a playlist. Typically this is done with a command+shift+click and drag UI. This makes it easy to make new playlists from old playlists, or even from a whole library of tracks. You almost have an implementation of this in Plex with the checkboxes, but there is no ability to add the selected tracks to a playlist. I would of course prefer to do all playlist management in Plexamp.
The ability to play a single track while maintaining your selections is a bonus that makes the playlist creation process a breeze. I believe Spotify implements this with a play button that does not require a double click, allowing you to audition tracks without losing your set of selections.
The click and drag workflow is smoother for playlist creation than Plex’s clever contextual menu system, but if you could select multiple tracks before adding to a playlist I would not mind having to open and navigate the menus in order to get the tracks into the intended playlist.
I have a number of smaller feature requests, but none would be as impactful as this if implemented. Thank you for maintaining the best music app I’ve ever used.
