Selecting tracks in Plexamp

The latest Plexamp app does not appear to allow selection of multiple tracks for playing, adding to queue, inserting into playlists, etc. If true, this is a major shortcoming that prevents Plexamp from being considered a credible alternative to other players. Creating a large playlist one track at a time is just not reasonable.

Where are you looking to be able to select multiple tracks from?

I’m looking to select multiple tracks from anywhere. For example, if I have a folder on a NAS that contains 500 tracks, and want to put the first 200 of them in a playlist, I can’t find a way to select many or all of them in one action (say, by SHIFT-clicking on the first, and then SHIFT-clicking on the last one, as can be done in most audio player apps). It could also be to copy a subset of tracks from a playlist and add them to the queue, in one action. Or delete a subset of the queue and delete them from the queue, or put them in a playlist, in one action. In general, I find the ability to select multiple tracks in one action very missing in PLEXAMP. Am I missing something?

You’re right, there is no multi-select for a random assortment of tracks, but in many cases you can achieve the same result by using our powerful filtering view on the Tracks screen. For example, you can show all tracks added in the last month which have had 0 plays and then add all of those to a playlist.

That’s really a shame and a major deficiency compared to almost all music players on the market. Playlist use is one of the most popular features of an audio player, and for Plexamp to have no way for the user to have full control of playlist creation/content, in an efficient way, is a deal killer for me and for many others I suspect. I sincerely hope Plex rethinks this, as I believe it will be the major inhibitor to Plexamp truly becoming “the Audio Player for Audiofiles”.

Thanks very much for responding.

i can understand how it’s important to your use cases, but realize it might not be to others. i’ve only heard a few people request multi select over a few years.

Interesting… I’ve asked 7 people I know this past week about this issue, that I consider significant users of music apps, and 6 of the 7 told me they wouldn’t use an app that couldn’t select multiple tracks to move, delete, populate playlists, remove from a queue, etc. Also, I think it’s very telling that every major streaming service (including Tidal that you partner with) has that feature. The industry clearly is out of sink with the user base you’re hearing from.

Not sure you’re getting the real feedback you need, or that your potential user base isn’t significantly limited by this and you’re not aware of it.

Good luck anyway.

I think I understand the confusion, you’re talking about the desktop versions of those apps. Their mobile apps do not allow multi-selection.

Plexamp for the desktop was not designed to be a full-fledged desktop app, with things like large window layouts, keyboard navigation, and (presumably) multi-select.

I asked my 7 closest friends and none of them even knew what “multiselect” was.

Yes, I am referring primarily to desktop apps. Most “audiophiles” I know don’t manipulate their music libraries on mobile apps because it’s much more cumbersome to record, organize, store, and otherwise manipulate (playlists, add, delete, etc.). They sometimes use desktop apps also when they are listening to music at home, as it is easier to view their libraries and control their systems. They do use mobile devices/apps to stream their music from their servers or streaming services when they’re “on-the-go”.

I asked 2 then ran out of friends

You’d have at least one (very grateful) more if Flexpass had multi-select !
