I am a long time user of Plex and really enjoy the software.
I listen to online radio a lot and most of them are mp3/aac streams from a remote online provider. Some of which I pay for, like di.fm and radiotunes.com.
Or just be able to add my personal icecast server url as a stream into the software as an available on-demand source.
It would be nice to be able to add these streams (From any provider that offers them) into the plex software as on-demand audio sources and listen to them in the plexamp app.
Having them in a nice playlist (pls, m2u, or m3u8) would be preferred.
appreciate the idea…tbh we’re predisposed to stream only from a media server because lots of the cool features rely on server functionality (e.g. loudness analysis). i guess you’d get visualizers, and maybe a few other cool aspects, but for the most part a lot of it would be missing compared to server-provided content
I definitely need shoutcast/icecast style streaming just like the old winamp. It shouldn’t be too much different than how podcasts already work on plex. I suppose the plex server could relay the steam to give the local features you describe. But until then I’m stuck using vlc or audacious. I appreciate the consideration of the feature though and all of the hard programming work you all put into the software.
Unless you just do it client side direct streaming from the source with the understanding that those other features aren’t available.
I was going to do it myself, until i realized that plugins don’t work anymore and the old channels feature is gone.
It definitely would be nice to have Plex as the only go to app and have all of my video and audio experience in one place.
How does the Tidal thing work? Does it go through the PMS first?
I’m not a user of any of the “premium” music streaming services, but I do like to listen to Internet radio now and then. It really would be nice to be able to do that through plexamp and pare down my apps.
Tidal doesn’t do internet radio, though.
All internet media sources usually go directly from plex.tv to the clients.
Sometimes there is a grey area though, where the two are mixed. Like when you add Tidal content to your local music library.
I also miss the radio stream feature, and would like you to add it. For me the “cool features” doesn´t matter at all. If I want quality and features then I stream from my server but sometimes it´s just nice to take a random station and listen.
Hi Elan, first thank you for bringing this amazing platform to life, Plex has been a genuine game-changer for so many and you and your team deserve to be commended for all your work. I have two main queries related to this thread.
Is there a chance of the team developing a plex media scheduling tool based on our media content so we can create randomised, rule based playlists open to family and friends so we could offer a kind of curated TV/Radio station service?
I currently run an Icecast server which enables me to broadcast a 24/7 automated stream and connect remotely to make live broadcasts. Being able to stream to listeners free of charge via my website and other platforms (including the mobile plex app and Tune in for example) is really important to me. Is there any chance at all of a future Plex/Plexamp update that enables me to do something like this?
those are both super interesting ideas! we’re not currently working on them, and they would definitely take significant effort, but the general idea of being able to curate a “lean-back” experience for friends is a very cool one.
I still can’t believe that it’s 2021 and we still don’t have streaming radio in Plex. I mean you guys will spend time on “Arcade” but not on streaming radio?
Sadly I guess I’ll have to keep juggling music players as my MusicBee player does Shoutcast, SomaFM, TuneIn etc just fine.
I don’t think that this has anything to do with developer resources and is more about driving people into Tidal as MusicBee was written and maintained by one guy (not a team like Plex has).
False. It’s about us wanting to focus our efforts into exploring and enjoying your own library of music. There are plenty of apps for streaming radio already.
We both know that isn’t the case. You guys killed plugin support without a replacement killing the old shoutcast plugin. Also just look at the top comment from this Article:

The folks at Plex seem to be pushing a ton of “features” that nobody wants to pay for, nobody asked for, and nobody will use. My lifetime membership offers me no input to them that matters, and they consistently ignore bugs for the sake of “new shiny”.
is it really complicated to add this radio stream feature to Plex? I do not think so. Instead of working on Plex Arcade bullshit, give Plex server admins real functions. Let admins personalize their clients’ experience on their server
Podcast feature works well, why not radio? I only use Kodi for the excellent simple Radio add-on. If I had something similar on Plex, I would get rid of Kodi.
I think you will find that they will be forced to add this or their competition will eat them up. Jellyfin is getting better all the time and they DO support internet radio streams:
I started a new thread under Internet radio for PlexPlayer but have not had any response so thought I would try here.
I recently installed Plex Server on Windows and PlexPlayer on an RPi to replace my SqueezeBox system that gave up the ghost.
I mostly listen to music and Plex Server does a nice job with my music library but I cannot figure out how to listen to Internet Radio through PlexPlayer. The ideal way would be via Plex Server but based on the above that does not appear to be an option. How can I listen to Internet Radio through PlexPlayer? I am not looking for anything fancy, I just want to be able to listen to music stations from around the world like I used to.
Other than this, Plex is very nice and once I can get Internet Radio working I will be subscribing!
I am trying to EOL my Slimserver (LMS) as well, and have trasitioned all my ripped music to Plexserver + Plexamp on RPI. It works great and I am very happy with the SQ.
BUT (and it is a big but…) without internet radio I just cannot fully make the switch. I must have NPR, BBC, Radio Paradise, The Current, and SOMA FM on a stream. Please implement this.
