Stop considering “fixing bugs” to be a perk or feature of Plex Pass and release updates to PMS simultaneously to all users.
With v1.0 of PMS the company should instead focus on differentiating the subscription perks on a feature value-added basis, there is no company with a good reputation that considers ‘fixing bugs’ to be a feature.
The launch of v1 IMO only highlights this. v1.0.0 clearly had any number of issues, some of which have recently been resolved (15th July) in a PMS release 1.0.1 that is only available to PlexPass members. What’s glaring is that the list of Fixes is three times the length of the list of ‘New’ items (which is in itself, ambiguous - 8 items, largely related to what otherwise could be 1 item “Agent Streamlined”).
edit: It is hard to be an advocate for Plex with this staggered release methodology when it is most often not predominantly feature additions but bug fixing.
PlexPass releases can also server as another layer of testing for the DEV before a general release.
The new Plex Movie agent in ver 1.0.1 would be an example of DEVs wanting the PlexPass subscribers to hammer on it a bit to flush out any issues before a general release
I appreciate the sentiment, I’ve heard it before, I just dispute that any perceived value in the position stands up to logical scrutiny*.
It would maximise the number of people testing new releases to encompass both groups, subscribers and non, in a simultaneous release. If there is a concern about releasing a poor build then it should simply stand as an option in server settings whether or not the PMS seeks stable or testing builds during update checks.
Plex Movie agent is perhaps a pertinent example for both sides of this argument - understandably it may need testing, but with Freebase facing imminent expiry (the datadump, even if grabbed, is only a bandaid solution given that the data will be stale in a short amount of time) an agent to replace, or at least it being striped out of PMS, it isn’t just ‘nice’ but practically mandatory.
v1.0 has nudged this thorn again since posting this request.
v1.0.2 is now available, with more fixes than additions yet again.
Anyway, that’s my feature request - I guess non-PlexPass users don’t get to vote up (or whatever happens) feature suggestions, and there’s unlikely to be a groundswell of PlexPass subscribers saying “yeah, that’s a good idea” (when it wouldn’t change anything for them). I just thought I’d put it forward so the notion might at least be considered.
