I hope this isn’t a duplicate request. I did put in at least a medium effort so search for duplicates. A (slight) TL:DR is available below.
So I was previously restricting content in my two libraries, Movies and Series, by a custom Label which used color names for referencing the overall intensity of a specific title. The color ranges were Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, Black. Green being least explicit or intense, Black being the most explicit, and generally something kept to my eyes only.
For example, The Last Samurai is simply labeled “Red” due to bloody violence. All of my kids (hypothetical kids, don’t actually have any, k) are currently restricted from viewing The Last Samurai, as any “Red” label content is not included in their PIN locked managed user accounts in my Plex Home. Kids under 10 have the labels “Green, Yellow”, while younger teens have “Green, Yellow, Orange”. This works VERY well, at first…
The problem is that I have no ability to differentiate based on my family values in specific "Content Categories" that I that want to maintain in my house. In my opinion and perspective, The Last Samurai is very violent in it’s depictions, but also anti-violent in it’s themes. The story mostly promotes peaceful resolution to violent conflict (not gonna argue other points here). Given this theme, and the lack of sexual content, language, or glorified drug use, I am OK letting younger teens view the film. Yet, opening up the “Red” label to them would also give them access to say, the first _Saw _movie.
Now, for The Last Samurai, the easy answer would be to change the “rating” Label to Orange. However, I also have a lot Anime in my Series library, and as most know, Anime can have WILDLY varying intensities in “Content Categories”. Take Nisekoi, for example. The series is a very light hearted rom com, and would seem to be an easy “Yellow”. However, at times it becomes very sexually suggestive, while not showing “explicit” nudity. It has a couple of those rapey-boob-grab scenes (in the OVAs) that many Anime are doing lately, where a group of girls basically sexually assault each other in the hot springs/bath houses… Incidentally, being less prudish, even graphic nudity in Anime that is shown practical depiction, like bathing, is not offensive to me at all, nor would I hide it from my kids. Once it becomes a highly and intentionally titillating scene, however, it’s not at all something I’d want the kids seeing.
(Slight) TL;DR
I want the ability to set multiple color intensive Labels for as many “Content Categories” I’d like. I want to Labels to be inclusive and exclusive. To use my personal Label build as an example, I’d have 7 Content Categories with the 5 color intensities:
Anime - the “anime” rating, or, how “uncomfortable” it gets… because Japan… this is basically to supplement the N and S Labels. Only used for Anime, obviously
Horror - covers how much shocking, frighting, or psychologically intense content is present. Can supplement the V Label
Language - covers the amount or intensity Foul language or mature dialogue
Magic - covers the intensity level of supernatural elements. To account for Plex Friends who are Christian and concerned with this
Nudity - covers amount or intensity of nudity or near-nudity
Sexuality - covers the intensity of any intentionally titillating or erotic
Violence - covers the amount or graphic intensity of violence depicted
Colors: Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, Black
The Last Samurai would be Labeled - H:Orange, L:Yellow, M:Green, N:Green, S:Green, V:Red
Nisekoi would be Labeled - A:Red, H:Green, L:Yellow, M:Green, N:Yellow, S:Orange, V:Yellow
A 14 year old teenagers user account would have every Label that I was OK with him viewing, so (abbreviated): A:G-O, H:G-O, L:G-O, M:G-R, N:G-R, S:G-Y, V:G-R. This actually be a long list of Labels in his Restriction list. For example, my account with all categories Black would have 35 Labels available to me.
The goal would be for Plex to show this user all titles that have the Labels in his list, while also hiding all titles that contain Labels that he does not have in his list. According to the above, this 14 year old user would be allowed to watch The Last Samurai, but he’d need to be a bit older before I let him watch Nisekoi and it’s rapey-boob-grabbing. The great thing about this method is all Parents can decide the color levels according to their own standards.
