[Feature Request] Smart Playlist, custom order, multiple libraries, unplayed

While smart playlists are useful for a series or movies that are ordered by things like the airdate, in some cases manually adjusting the order is needed and due to this feature not being available within a smart playlist, it pushes us to use a normal playlist, the same applies for wanting to join movies and tv shows together and the issue with a normal playlist, is that it doesn’t remember where you left off, so if you clicked on a playlist to continue watching a series or a collection of movies, it tends to start you from the beginning.

This means you have to remember where you left off or delete what you watched, if you do that then you also have to manually set up this playlist over and over again, basically every time you decide to re-watch.

So by adding the ability to manually customise the order (drag/drop) as well as allowing the addition of other libraries, such as tv and movies, then we could create smart playlists in specific orders that we are capable of filtering with the unplayed state, this means we would only have to mark everything as unplayed, instead of creating the same playlist.

Some examples of this would be

Prison Break, its a series but the last episode is a movie.

Star wars, while most people probably only know of the movies, there are also tv shows and many have their prefered order to watch from the saga order to Rinster, Machete etc…

Marvel Cinematic Universe, which includes Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, One-Shot and all the movies

There is even going to be a series of walking dead movies, which I believe the first movies starts with Rick Grimes after he was taken, so that will link into the series itself.

Lastly, if we were able to mark everything that existed in a playlist as unplayed, it would save a lot of time going to individual movies/shows and marking them as unplayed.

So to summarise

  • Allow the order of the media to be changed manually through drag and drop or even an up/down arrow, anything that is automatically added can be placed at the end of the smart playlist if the order is set manually.

  • Allow the integration of other libraries within a smart playlist, this is more aimed towards TV/Movie libraries.

  • Allow users to mark media linked to a playlist/smart playlist as unplayed. honestly not sure how this would be done, but it would be nice to just click a button and reset the media that is linked to a smart playlist back to its original state, basically, the only filter that would get ignored in this scenario would be the unplayed filter.

I agree that there should be the ability to mix-match the Movie and TV library types in Custom Filter built playlists. This applies to a couple different situations where I cannot find a workaround, but a way around this is to use thetvdb.com to set some Movies as Specials thereby starting with Season 0 Episode X for the specified Movie. This works out for all the Stargate Movies since they were considered a Special for Stargate SG-1. The Walking Dead has worked out so far, but once the Walking Dead Movie with Rick comes out that may cause me to miss the movie if it isn’t considered a special. Cobra Kai is another good example where you can add the karate kid movies as specials for the Cobra Kai TV show to allow them to apply to your custom playlists.

The benefit of using Movies as specials, is they still pull in the release date metadata for the Movie to allow them to fall in the proper release order. I hope this helps you come up with ideas for some of the TV shows. At the moment Star Trek, MCU, Star Wars, and Terminator are the only sets I have that I cannot use custom playlists for as the Movies vs. TV are too obscure to quantify as a special in one of the TV Shows. You can always create your own metadata and add them as specials as well. Hope this gives some workaround ideas.

Cheers!

for the uplayed option use the custom filter, “Episode Unplayed” with a value of “is true”. This is not to be confused with the “Unplayed Episodes” filter which applies to TV Shows wholistically (i.e. if any unplayed episodes exist within the show, then the episodes will still be listed.) I’m still trying to find a use-case for the “Unplayed Episodes” filter.

I hope this helps. I love where Smart Playlists are going, but integration with TV and Movie library types are desired for the large obscure connected collections like the Ridleyverse (https://www.imdb.com/list/ls050064593/?ref_=otl_5).
