[Feature Request] SRT or ASS Subtitle overlay support in apps

Hi there,

due the fact that a lot of people running the PMS on a NAS and that the most of them not powerful enough for a transcode I have a suggest. It would be nice if all of your apps would support SRT or better ASS subtitle files as overlay option. The very pretty samsung app support, damn fine piece of software by Orca, the srt files and could be seen as a example how it should be done.

Thx

Well, my request was CLOSED due to the fact that it was “similar” to this one. Even though, my request WAS MORE SPECIFIC to Opera TV devices (I see there are different engineers or progammers for every brand or group of devices and besides, asking for a global support of soft subtitles would be awesome but harder to measure and accomplish), SO I WILL POST MY REQUEST IN THIS THREAD OR PLEASE UNLOCK MINE.

AS an update to this original thread, it mentions ORCA accomplished to allow soft subtitles on its app (piece of software, damn right) for samsung TVs. Well, PLEX team accomplished it too (after many requests and updates) on its own app for 2016 samsung TVs.

MY “duplicated” request is this:

""Hello guys! I just wish to know if are we ever going to see this feature on our basic tv models with opera tv.
I just know that my TV (sony) can play soft subtitles from an USB. But anytime I use plex with subtitles it transcodes it.
They already made it possible in the new version of PLEX for 2016 Samsung Smart TVs “”

Can Plex add soft subtitle support for TiVo Bolt? WWE Network, Hulu, and Netflix all support soft subtitles on the device. Even the beta version of Emby supports soft SRT subtitles. Any chance of Plex adding support?

Most devices can already do srt subtitles natively as it is not very demanding. But .ass forget it, those can include heavy effects and animation limiting them to PC platforms only. To my own knowledge, on Android platforms it burns-in subtitles if transcoding is triggered for any reason due to some bug in the Android player itself. Don’t know about other platforms.

TiVo Bolt does support text subtitles (WebVTT) but the Plex Settings on TiVo have subtitle burn-in set to ALWAYS. Plex just needs to change that to “Image Formats Only” and I think that’s it.
