[Feature Request] The option to allow users other than the owner to delete media

This topic seems related to DVR functionality. Only the admin can set recordings as well.

I think that the option to give users the ability to “administer DVR” would be awesome! Perhaps even tie it to whatever library is getting the recordings and allow them to program and delete recordings in that library. It would be sort of like a “DVR admin”. Make it a flag for any user just like we have a flag for these things:

  • Allow Sync
  • Allow Camera Upload
  • Allow Plugins
  • Allow access to Live TV

Add a checkbox for “Admin DVR” (give them permission to schedule and delete recordings)

To get really greedy, perhaps split this up so you could give a user the right to program recordings but not delete items?

My wife had me program some shows that only she watches. She logs in as herself on the Roku, watches the shows then she can’t delete them. She also can’t think of something she wants to record and go in and program it herself either. She can see it in the guide, but no way to schedule it.

Very frustrating…

PS: if the rationalization for NOT currently having this functionality is that there is “only one admin” who could do this via file manager on the back end, what is the purpose of making the “delete items” option exist to begin with if not to delete DVR recordings that you don’t care to keep? Of course, this is something that every home user needs to do not JUST the admin.

Furthermore, why on earth would this option be “global” meaning someone could delete movies from your collection, not JUST DVR recordings. Do even admins use this functionality? I have yet to EVER delete anything but recorded OTA programs using this option. I often keep other files in those sub-folder that Plex ignores, but I may want like extra audio tracks that I am planning to mux into my existing movie and I would certainly not want to delete an entire folder arbitrarily OUTSIDE the “Recorded TV” library. As storage gets cheaper I have been going back and re-ripping a lot of my media to 1080 that I may have originally ripped to 720 to save space. All sorts of functionality that I would NEVER consider messing with from the front end and I doubt any real “admins” would either.

This make me think that Plex possibly took a shortcut to being able to delete from the front end by not tying it to any specific library just to say they now had this “feature”. In reality its dangerous. My 8 year old could be messing with the remote when I get up for 60 seconds to pee and deletes a 20GB 3D rip for example. Scary…

To be clear I LOVE Plex. I don’t mean this comment to be a slam of the product. It wasn’t born an adult person, nor was any comparable platform. It evolves. I would just like it to evolve to have a more ■■■■-sapien-like brain instead of being stuck at the lemur level…

If you create a home theater platform designed for multiple users in a home, sell it as a “cord cutting” solution and have a DVR feature, it makes no sense to NOT have the functionality that people are asking for here…

+1

Having a Plex Pass account and user management for the family, it would be good to give us more configurable options so that users can have more choices like deleting an item and even scanning these libraries…

Duplicate - this one has more votes… lets go over here and vote on it. Such a simple feature that has been requested since at least 2014 yet somehow Plex cant seem to add it…

I need this very much and I’m so frustrated that even paid version doesn’t support this feature.
