I just switched my file naming convention and mass-renamed my television shows. Plex seems to attach view/played status to the file rather than the show metadata. This means that after Plex matched all my ‘new’ files, it marks them unwatched. Would it be possible to attach view status to the episode metadata rather than to the files themselves? Would anyone else find this useful?
No, Plex bases the ‘watched’ status on the show.
However, this is based on the identification number from the metadata provider.
So, if you first used TheTVDB to ‘match’ your series, but are now using TheMovieDatabase (or vice versa),
then Plex doesn’t know that you already watched the episode(s).
You need to re-use the same metadata agent.
And if you did not ‘match’ your files at all (possible with embedded metadata or external .nfo files), then there is no way at all to achieve what you’re after.
I wonder why it would have matched somewhere else after renaming.
Well I just reordered my agents and rematched and my watched status is fixed! I guess it grabbed metadata elsewhere after renaming. Thanks!
