Figuring out why the server is transcoding everything

I find that when I play back from my desktop computer via the web app that the server transcodes everything. There are no bandwidth constraints (e.g., I can mount a share and use VLC just fine). Since the client is a full general purpose desktop computer, it should be able to handle any codec.

How do I figure out why everything is being transcoded? This needlessly makes seeking slow and prone to crashing.

The web app runs in your browser.

The Player Apps don’t run in your browser.

PMP - Home Theater - very powerful - special settings in TV View.
Plex for Windows/Mac - more like the web app.

I’m not quite sure I follow what you’re getting at. Could you explain a bit more? Are you saying that the browser interface player is not very capable?

Your browser is not very capable.

VLC comes with everything it needs to Direct Play everything.
Your Browser comes with nothing.

The Player Apps come with everything they need to - Direct Play almost everything.

If you post the media info of one such item, we can tell you exactly why transcoding occurs.
