File & Folder Naming Convention Issue for DVD Concert Song Files

Hi. Help. I’m going to use my ripped version of the Concert DVD that I have (Journey’s Greatest Hits DVD 1978-1997) as the example of my issue. First of all, I ripped this Concert DVD into one MKV file. I then took that file and split it by Song/chapter so that I also now have 18 MKV DVD song files. The one “full concert” mkv file appears in Plex perfectly (artwork and info). I did need to run a “match” to get it to pick up the metadata properly but that’s all good. My issue is that I would like to have all 18 songs (the split MKV files) appear in my Plex Server with artwork/info and all 18 songs listed and available for selection (to play). Is that possible? Right now, I only see one DVD entry in my “Concert Folder” with the artwork and then when I click on it to view what is “inside” that entry, I only see a “play” option and not the 18 songs listed. I hope this makes sense. If I take my original DVD and put it into let’s say a DVD player, it gives me the option to choose any track on that DVD and play it. I would like the same option in Plex. Is there a way to get this ripped Concert DVD (the 18 mkv song files) appear much like a ripped Music CD would? Again I hope this makes sense.

I’ve played around with this (file names, folder names & structure) for a while now and can’t seem to get this to appear/work correctly. I have found the “folder view” but that doesn’t give me “Artwork” and it’s extra clicks to even get 1 song to play.

Just wondering ……. And thanks in advance.

While this is certainly viable, it won’t allow you to play more than one song consecutively. This is a live concert after all, which needs to be experienced in full and without interruption, IMHO. Turning it into a collection of single songs is not desirable.

Personally, I treat concerts the exact same as movies when preparing them for Plex.
For skipping to a particular song, I make sure to transfer the chapter markers off the disc into the ripped file.
Makemkv allows you to do this.
Using MKVtoolnix, you then can rename those chapter markers and change the generic “Chapter 1” to the actual song title.

All Plex clients allow jumping to a particular chapter.
The only con of this approach is that you cannot add single songs to a mixed playlist.

You may find this and the links in there of interest: Concerts

Thank you for your reply!! I’ll re-rip the concert adding in Chapter markers and then use MKVToolnix (which I had used to split up into Song Files). This solution sounds great and saves me a ton of space on my NAS.

I’ve now renamed all the Chapters to Song Titles using the Chapter Editor in MKVToolNix v79.0 and then copied the edited/saved MKV Concert file back to the Plex Server (NAS). It’s perfect. Exactly what I wanted. Oh…. I also didn’t need to re-rip the MKV file as the Chapter Markers were there already.

Thanks again.
