i have a folder with FILMS one with SERIES and one WITH MUSIC  so i don't know where is the trouble

Well your are going to have to help us help you,

That page I linked has about 20 other links on it to the rest of the documentation.

Which part/parts in all of that do you not understand?

What kind of trouble?

Is plex not seeing any of the media?

nah all my films and series are found with no problems atm, but when i want download one it's downloading with name 'file.avi or file.mkv'

what Version number of server are you running and what version? what browser? it downloads with correct file name for me.

just to make sure, you are speaking of when you use the menu to download file from the Web app the resulting file name is not the actual file name in the directory

i use the lastest server version on debian, firefox(doing the same on ie, didn't tried on chrome) and yes it is when i use the download button on the web app =)

pretty sure it a a browser thing on how the link is created dynamically. Chrome is the only one i think that does it correctly. ( I am not a web developer so don't know specifics on why that is )

nah i just tried on chrome same problem here

are you on local network with the server machine? or when actually on server computer? it was just suggested to me that might be related to localhost or local network it too.

I thought the download option always used the file.ext name. It does for me.

I should have been more precise. If i right click on the Download link and choose "save link as" ( which i am always in the habit of doing so forgot to mention) in chrome on mac anyway, it will save with real file name. if i just click Download it will be file.ext. but i can only get it to do this in chrome

Wow.  I never knew that.  Thanks BigWheel.

Just to report an oddity--- on both both Firefox and Chrome, tested several times to make sure I had same results

When accessing through local network (plex server ip:32400), clicking on the download link saves the file with the correct name - "my-movie.mp4".  If I use the "save link as" option it defaults to"file.mp4"

However, if I access from plex.tv, it works the opposite.  That is, clicking on download defaults to "file.mp4", save link as uses the correct file name - "my-movie.mp4"

This is still happening for me on a Mac and Chrome. Click or right click on download for a music file and the file will be called “file.flac”

EDIT: if you try directly for the search result it will do this. If you click save as on download from the currently playing track it will save the correct filename. If you click download on the currently playing now it will save as file.ext

@lpr thank you! They really should alter the way the download is pushed and have it include headers for the target filename, but your technique of picking ‘save as’ on the download works great!
