I have a plex pass for life so I support the program. It’s disappointing to now be relegated to a users group for support on a product I paid full boat for.
I have recorded some video tapes to mp4. They all transcoded without error. They all play perfect on the server with VLC or Quicktime so I know it’s not an issue with the files. BUT plex doesn’t recognize them. I am getting very frustrated. I even transcoded some using handbrake to the exact values PLEX states mp4 files need to be. BUT alas no joy. So how do I get plex to recognize and play them?
IMHO this is ridiculous and the plex system needs to simply recognize and play any media file that conforms to the mp4 specifications regardless of plex’s personal favorites.
This has been an ongoing issue with PLEX for over 8 years I have come to find out.
Why not just fix your stupid player platform?
i’m not sure if you mean the files are not showing up or they are not playing. VLC and quick time are just essentially file players like Microsoft Word is a text file player. Plex needs to import them into database libraries based on their type so many of the features of the library types, mostly metadata related, can be used.
If you do not care about metadata or tv shows behaving like TV shows. (queuing up next episode) then use an OTHER VIDEOS library.
Well for starters they don’t show up. even if they have the plex preferred encoding values. Why do I need to complicate everything by creating a secondary library? I have never had to do that in past so why now? they are named correctly, no special characters or anything. Just text.mp4 I have never had any such issues prior to now.
Then it isn’t named correctly. Nothing major has changed with how files need to be named in quite long time.
The other common reason a file would not show up is file permissions but would need to know what you are running PMS on to know if it might be an issue for you
How is that not named correctly? I have dozens of other files in the same folder that are named similarly and they show up. PMS runs on a mac mini with sierra as it has for a very long time. I have moved the files around easily to other folders to test and back again. They all have been transcoded by handbrake and had no errors.
Well you haven’t told us what type of library is. I’m guessing you don’t have a movie named “Text” but maybe you do. If it isn’t a movie called text, then telling us the real name would help. Since it is an mp4 it could have embedded metadata causing a mismatch or being recognized as something else if prefer local metadata enabled. What the file was created in generally does not matter at all.
the file is named CTWEDDING.mp4 It is in a folder called personal videos then a sub folder called new files. as for meta data I didn’t set anything unique on creation as I said above these were just dubs from old VHS tapes.
I don’t have an option for edit cinema that I can find. I don’t find anywhere in the menu that gives me general, add folders, advanced Could it not be there since I use a Mac Mini with sierra as my PMS?
“Cinema” is the name of the library that Bigwheel has in the example. For you, it is whatever library you created (maybe you just typed in “Movies”?) when you created it.
I created a new library and they were read. But I ideally don’t want them in the library I created. Now they are read can I move them to the library were I want them? or will moving them create the same issue?
answer anyone. Will moving these to other libraries cause them to not show up again? I want to move them to existing libraries that most closely match the subject of the movie. ie holiday with holiday, personal with personal etc. Please advise.
What type of library is it that already exists that you want it in. When you created that library you made a choice, which choice was that. What agents are you using in that library. Look at the advanced settings of the library and take a screenshot if you don’t know what you are looking at.
