Files with both HDR10+ & DoVi Profile 8.1 metadata show blank/black screen

“Better” depends on the expectations.

I don’t like the approach of PKC, as it’s very clunky compared to P(M)4K.

I think clunky is the opposite of how it would typically be described, given it is just using the native Kodi interface - lightweight as it can get but with almost all the benefits of Plex. I’d use it as my daily driver for Plex if a device capable of running PKC also supported color-accurate TV-led Dolby Vision output.

I have a Fire Stick 4K Max and while Plex used to play things fine, certain 4k files now play in a split/duplicate screen, even files I used to play without issue a few weeks’ ago. If I turn off HDR in the Fire stick settings, Plex then just plays the movie with a black screen and audio.

I’ve checked and I have the latest version of the Plex app on my fire stick that is available through the Amazon Appstore, which is 10.5.0.4996. I can’t seem to find a solution and it’s making Plex unusable. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Has the patch mentioned earlier in this thread that correctly detects HDR10+ been added to PMS yet?

I have two different DV8/HDR10+ files. On the latest gen2 firestick 4k max, one plays back correctly as HDR10+, the other was exhibits wrapping. Kodi plays both files back incorrectly with wrapping, so I know the Plex fix here is at least partially working when HDR10+ is detected.

Comparing the two files in Media Info, they have the same HDR format. However, the file that is not playing correctly does not have the “title” field populated.

Comparing the media info in plex itself, there is mention of HDR10+ in the file that plays but none in the file that does not.

This would indicate why some folks are saying this is still not working.

Is there any update to this issue? It used to work and now it doesn’t.

Someone must be working on this.

I know it has been a while but I’m happy to report that the issue has been fixed for me. Now I can play videos with both DoVi and HDR10+ and they will play as DoVi without blacking out my screen! Thank you!

Thanks, Just updated my 2 firesticks, one original 4k and other 4k max. Both work fine now…

Thank you

Does your device support DoVi P7? The force option allows you to force the capability if your device doesnt say its support it, but it actually does, but it wont add profile 7 support to the device.

It sounds like your device can’t handle DoVi P7 at all, and wont be able to play them. If thats the case then you will need to keep the force DoVi p7 setting disabled.

FireTV only plays profile 7 MEL, otherwise it causes a blank screen just like the issue with HDR10+.

Just convert your P7 DV files to P8.1

@sixones, @quietvoid… it’s a long thread and I’ve searched without any luck… I have forgotten and it may have been addressed but… with regards to DV file playback on the Fire Stick 4K Max (gen 1), does the latest version of Plex for Android 10.13.0 convert DVp7 to DVp8 on the fly as in the latest v21 of Kodi?

With the Force DVp7 setting on, I get a pink screen. With it off, my DVp7 files play in HDR (w or w/o HDR 10+ metadata). DVp8 files play correctly in DV. On my Sony A80CK OLED TV w/GTV, with the Force DVp7 setting on, all my DVp7 files play in DV as intended, including those with HDR 10+ metadata.

So Plex is not converting DVp7 files to DVp8 for the Fire Stick 4k Max as in the latest v21 of Kodi. Will this ever be a feature in Plex for the Fire Stick 4k Max? Thanks for any info/explanation. As always, I/we appreciate your efforts in regards to this issue.

I have exactly the same problem on Firestick 4K Max (Gen 2).
Plex version 10.14.0

Unfortunately we are unable to convert DoVi profile 7 into profile 8 at the moment due to licensing constraints. For your setup, it sounds like you need to keep the Force DoVi Profile 7 support to disabled and instead rely on HDR10 playback.
