I have a large collection of recorded tv, 99.5% stored as .ts files. For the most part I have no problem whatsoever with these playing on all my devices. I do however have a few over the last 6 months that are having issues when using the firestick Plex client.
I have two types of issues, they may be related, they may not be. One is where playback suddenly freezes video but audio keeps going. Two is more recent and there’s a batch of files that are stuttering on video and not delivering audio.
Setup is Plex server on dedicated linux DEB box. All files stored on a NAS server (Netgear). All clients wired connection except Firestick and Samsung TV - wireless. Wired connections to server and NAS are 1 and 10GB respectively. Wireless, using Draytek 2860 which is 802.11n up to 200Mbps. No network speed issues detected for any other uses.
I use TS-Doctor to get the .ts files as error free as possible so I am assuming that the files conform to standards. That is however an assumption and I have no current knowledge of how they are constructed.
All the problem files seem to play fine on my PC or my laptop using plex web client, using MPC-HC (old version) or using VLC. They play fine on my Samsung TV with Plex client, they play fine to a number of boxes using DLNA from NAS or direct from NAS using SMB connections. Even the Humax recorder can play them direct from the NAS box.
The firestick plays fine with Amazon and Netflix and for most of the local files.
As luck would have it, our primary screen is a beautiful old plasma, still going strong but dumb and reliant on set top boxes. That’s why we got the firestick, cheapest out of the box solution for amazon, netflix and we hoped PLEX for the recorded TV.
As far as PLEX goes, relatively new to the environment but loving it for the interface it brings across devices and other than this platform playback issue it has been a doddle to set up etc. Therefore need some pointers as to how to determine root cause of these two issues on the firestick.
Logically it appears to be the firestick client be that the app itself or configuration, rather than the wireless link or the chain leading to it, but I’m finding it hard to work out whether the firestick is simply passed the file location or whether the plex server is in the tranmission process and whether there’s any transcoding (I’m assuming not as the basic dashboard activity doesn’t show that or indeed the server system (old Dell box) doesn’t kick in with cooling on cpu or graphics card, which it does when scanning the full libarary for instance.
Any pointers and help gratefully received as to how to start tracking this down and hopefully resolving the issues.
