My cousin says streaming on her firestick has had lots of problems lately. Different shows, different filetypes (MKV, MP4, etc) and still same result. Often it just stops after like 2 minutes she says. Sometimes it just gets stuck and she has to back out/back in and it will resume, but often do it again. Sometimes it just closes out to the menu. I also have seen these issues on my end, but not as often as she is experiencing them.
*She tried backing out, restarting firestick, logging out/logging in.
*Her quality is set to “Maximum”
*I had her disable “Enable New Video Player” which I heard causes issues
*I run the server, and have gigabit internet so bandwidth isnt an issue
(along with Ryzen 9 3900 12 core CPU, 64 Gigs DDR4 memory, and P2000)
Is there any known issues with the newest android based Plex software, or any other settings she should change or things to try? Any help is appreciated.
well… the FireSticks are a pain.
But so far we’re probably not even getting to that.
In order to cook this down a bit you might want to look into the following 2 scenarios (or rule them out respectively):
could this be linked to your remote access setup? – e.g.
low/insufficient upload speed
indirect/relayed connection
is your server up to the transcoding load if needed?
To start looking into this you could check out the Now Playing section of the dashboard on your Plex Media Server’s web app. This will show if the connection is remote vs. indirect and if the video is being transcoded
Follow-up question… do you experience issues yourself when playing media from outside your home network?
Sorry but above it does mention my setup, which is very strong (Ryzen 9 12 Core CPU, 64 Gigs DDR4 PC3600 Memory, and a P2000 along with other goodies on symmetrical gigabit internet (~940 up, ~940 down).
Almost everything is direct playing and I always am watching Tautulli stats. They’re players are all set for original quality, disabled new video player, and h264 isn’t set incorrectly to 1 as many other threads report. Nothing is on a relayed connection and have reverse proxy setup for guest Tautulli access so they can always check their own stats/streaming.
Yet several Firestick users at different locations all report the same or very similar issues
They got no issues if they use a different Plex client? (e.g. Plex for Windows / Plex Media Player / Plex Web)?
As said… if you can rule all those out – it really comes down to the shortcomings of the FireTV platform. Which is (I suppose) what @nydave69 tried to tell in a more subtle way.
I’ve searched Firestick and see no clear obvious posts and he’s 0% helpful sharing any links.
They use smart TV apps which suck for their own reasons, but don’t have the same problems.
I can have 15 people transcoding and my CPU doesn’t even break 35% utilized with the p2000 so it’s not server strength or bandwidth issues, and other devices operate as normal. I unfortunately always hyped up firesticks so that’s what most of my friends and family use now
The only thing you gave us is issues…
There have to be over a hundred treads on the firestick problems, and I do not know which one’s you were seeing and with what versions of software.
If you have a specific issue then do a forum search… I’m sure it’s there…
