To add: VLC thinks 7-pt-1.mkv is a music file and doesn’t show the normal player ui like it would when playing a video file.
When I play the problem video file I shared in VLC and view video information it reports the audio as:

Do you agree, there are times when PMS declares 5.1 when a file is really 7.1 ?
It does appear that plex misidentifies 7-pt-1.mkv but does correctly identify my problem file. Do you think this is related to the original issue?
I’m not sure if I made it clean previously but other files with eac3 5.1 audio play fine. It’s only some eac3 files that fail to play. I did a little more digging and found another eac3 file with 5.1 audio which plays normally and ran mediainfo on it. It has a much lower bitrate so I’m now more convinced this is a issue with plex having issues with high bitrate eac3 audio.
@ChuckPa any idea if plex developers are aware of any issues with this?

Give me a sample of the one of the files which doesn’t play and I’ll check it.
I’ve not found anything valid which I can’t play.
“Some” is suspicious. One thing you must be careful of when dealing with Dolby – running out of inotify slots because the transcoder needs 1 slot per active stream
The default on pre 5.0 kernels is 8192
The default on 5.0 is 65536
Each directory monitored takes one slot (including the support structure)
Count up all directories being used. see if the limit exceeded
Here’s how-to increase if needed
This file I posted the other day is a good example of a file not playing in plex, but plays in other players on the same device.
I increased the user watches months ago and I’ve also tried disabling automatically index library.
fs.inotify.max_user_watches = 524288
user.max_inotify_watches = 524288
Now for the flip side question. At 504+1024 (1528) bytes per path (which is what it stores). Do you have enough memory to dedicate to (764 MB of memory dedicated solely to the table). If there isn’t room, the kernel will reject it at boot.
The machine has 8gb of ram. I assume that is enough to spare for inotify.
Check free -m see what you get

Ok. That sample file was created with Plex’s transcoder. If Plex is struggling to play the original file, would it be reasonable to think it had trouble creating the sample file?

NAL unit 62 & 63 are used in HEVC (which FFMPEG added support for over 4 years ago)
Get a new copy/ This one is busted/bad re-encode / capture.
Ok, I created that sample file using the instructions from the plex help article on creating a sample file using plex transcoder. I’m uploading the full file and will pm you in a min or two with a link.
There’s a much easier way.
dd if=source_file.mkv of=output_file.mkv bs=1M count=50
That’s a 50 MB sample file.
More than enough to see if the original is bad.

The type 63 warnings are normal because FFmeg ignores them.
It doesn’t mean the file is broken… they are for Dolby Vision.
