Is there a way to disable subtitles at all for the clients (server side)? I don’t want that clients can chose PGS subtitles.
Unfortunately not.
All you can do is either:
- remove the PGS subtitles from your media
- get a stronger server which can burn in PGS subtitles during transcoding
- provide an additional version of the subtitles in SRT format
I have the subtitles as SRT. But the clients sometimes defaults to PGS. Or the users chose the PGS by accident. So that’s all not a solution. I mean this has to be just a simple toggle in the server settings.
As stated,
This is a media curation issue, not a server issue.
So there is no technical solution to make a setting disableing subtitles at all for the clients? Can’t imagine.
This option under server settings would probably be the closet thing that you can actually do to prevent it, but it’s going to prevent users from transcoding down to lower quality levels also.
But as has been mentioned by the other 2 in this thread, this is really something that should be handled with your media prep so that you are only including those tracks that you want your users to be able to access.

The server will :
- As requested by the player app
- Play the desired/selected language subtitle if available
- No further granularity exists.
This is truly the responsibility of the server owner to curate (rip and process) video content which the system can deliver to the players.
Personally, when I rip a disc, I keep only those subtitles and audio tracks I need to keep. There is, for me, no reason to keep several languages when I only need English & German.
The “Technical Solution” – Use MKVToolnix GUI and remux out those tracks you don’t want. The process takes a few seconds for each file. It does not re-encode like HandBrake does.
