Subtitles always turned on by default, can't turn them off

Server Version#: Version 1.32.8.7639
Player Version#:10.7.0.5386
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

I have set subtitles to be manually selected in my account settings. However, they are always enabled by default for any content I watch. I have tried disabling the server setting “automatically select audio and subtitle tracks” too, to no avail.

I’d like the default to be subtitles off (except for non-english media) but allow them to be enabled by default on a per-account basis. It seems no matter what I do though, that they will not turn off, and I have to manually disable them for every single TV show episode I watch, which is extremely frustrating.

I recently switched to Plex from Emby and never had this issue with Emby. Can someone please tell me how I can fix this? Or is it a bug?

I’ve tried restarting the server (and players) after changing these settings, but that also makes no difference. After more testing, this issue doesn’t occur on the Plex Android app, but always happens on the app for Google Chromecast With Google TV.

I was finally able to disable them. After reading through the documentation for subs again, it turns out that you need to do the following to have them disabled by default:

  • Set “automatically select audio and subtitle tracks” to enabled (server setting)
  • Set “prefer subtitles in” set to none (server setting)
  • Set “automatically select audio and subtitle tracks” to disabled in the users account settings.

The in-server settings and descriptions should really be updated to make this process clearer.

I see how to enable them in the main server settings , but I don’t see how to disable individually for each user ?

How did you do this ?
