Please fix this. Make it so we can adjust each user individually.
I have this problem literally every time I decide to add a friend to my server.
Default should be direct play anything 1080P or below, with exception of incompatibility, but in case of transcoding due to that to default to 1080P transcodes too.
If a user truly has such crappy internet they canāt handle even a 1080P stream then that is an exceptional situation where you can then guide them to reduce their quality, it shouldnāt be the other way around.
You would think that they would start at original qualityā¦
And if for some reason it canāt play it directly then it would transcode it to a version that it can. and not necessarily a lower resolution, maybe a different bit rate.
I have this problem with a number of users, for some reason they keep resetting the Roku or fire stick and we start all over explaining how to get to the settings to change it back to maximum. And I hear, why is this such an issue, it works fine for everything else.
Even simply the ability to change each active streamās quality from the dashboard would be enough for me. Keep the 4Mbps 720p as default if its somehow necessary for Plex to remain insolvent
The problem with that for me is I donāt sit here and watch to see what others are playing⦠I usually get a text that there is a problem⦠and itās usually all the transcodes that are happening that donāt need too. So I once again get with that user to get there client set back to maximum/original (only because they complained otherwise it just causes confusion) and thatās one down and I wait for the next text⦠Problem is I am out of town a lot and just canāt help right away most of the time. Also I donāt own every device and Plex changes the client so things keep getting moved around making it very frustrating for both me and the user.
But the impression I get is that Plex just doesnāt care, (that being upper management).
It seems like being admin of a Plex server is a full time job. Your always looking for a work around to get things to work. (example I was going to add my music singles, worked on it for 3 days, you canāt is the short answer and no easy work around.)
I just came here to show my support, I recently greatly upped my server output + internet bandwidth.
Guess who spends 30 minutes explaining that they need to set the quality themselves, knows the ins and outs of every plex app for systems I donāt even own, me. Not to mention the second message when they inevitably use a different device and I have to explain that they need to manually set their quality every time.
For such a smart / useful program, Plex sure is dumb sometimes.
To share support, you can vote here (the link was already posted by tdharris, but it is lost somewhere in the middle of this thread):
Came in here to add my 2c including the post I made for the official feature request for this.
Everyone here should give it a vote!
Yes ⦠PLEASE default clients to max / org DirectPlay + Direct Stream and not that nonsense 4Mbit 720p
I have most of my content in 1080p 4Mbit h265 ⦠what happens it a client connects is requesting 720p 4Mbit h264 form an 1080p 4Mbit h265 original⦠GREAT
⦠and then my friends complain about getting eye cancer because of the poor quality because of the transcoded content ⦠at the same bandwith as the original would have been streamed if the clients settengs would have been at org + DP + DSā¦
this is pretty rediculus.
It is not a big change ⦠just change the defaults of the clients.
Original stream but cases where the client canāt display the content in the original format.
Maybe a popup to reduce to a lower bandwitch - not the same or even HIGHERr as the original - for a single video but donāt change the clients defaults.
Today i had a client set at 20Mbit converting an old SD show from 1Mbit h265 to a 20Mbit 1080p h264 stream.
because she thought the quality would get better that way ⦠mh ⦠NO!
There is just no logic in the way the client and the server negotiating the stream settings.
And the default quality is just wrong
thatās about it.
Also looking for this feature. Definitely annoying having people constantly complain about the quality when its just the dang default setting in their client!
It seems it would be more practical to be able to set this server side as an override for the clients that have the default setting.
It is totally annoying. With these default settings, even 720p content gets transcoded (higher bitrate).

I have to agree. I have been waiting for the ability to control a users setup. I also have to walk them through removing all of plex movie and tv, Web stuff, news etc. Most of my users hate the extra stuff. Itās a pain to go through this every time. Then they lose their settings for streaming because of a reset and here we go again. I really donāt think we will see this because Plex doesnāt want their movies and tv turned off. Why would they, itās their software not ours. Lol
Bump. This is my biggest annoyance with Plex, I have gigabit internet and yet all of my remote streams downgrade to 720p or even SD(!?) and it really grinds my gears.
PLEASE GIVE US MORE CONTROL.
Dear Plex team. Please give us the ability to change each active streamās quality from the dashboard. Thank you in advance.
I would have to agree that every client should default to MAX setting and have to manually lower the quality if it is too high of a bitrate.
When your stream if buffering you know it is too high but you may not be able to tell you are watching a lower transcoded version of the file.
My mother wants to watch home videos and she has poor internet so I am not able to force no transcoding sadly but it would be wonderful if I could set transcoding privilegeās per shared user at the server level.
Hard to believe this post started in 2017 and we still donāt have this feature. Some users have already been working on a way around this limitation: https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/kcebwa/i_believe_i_have_found_a_way_to_set_all_remote/
How hard would it be to allow the server to override the clients quality settings?. If not this just let the client automatically adjust the quality based on the connection speed and have the setting on by default.
Please for the love of all that is good add this feature!
- Bump -
Iād love to see this feature implemented.
Oh my God this thread is 3 years old. How is this still not implemented!?
I too have gigabit symmetrical internet, so itās extremely annoying when my users kill my CPU cause theyāre too unwise to go into the main settings and switch remote streaming to maximum.
Again, I understand not everyone has that, but at least default it to direct play? Then if someone does have problems, they can lower the bitrate themselves, or better, default the new auto adjust to on, that solves it for those having enough bandwidth and those who are on a limited plan.
-_-
Just going to bump this againā¦
Hopefully it doesnāt take another 3 years for them to implement an incredibly basic feature.
+1 for wanting this feature
