Think its a 5 year waiting period…
Before Plex even looks at it…
The way I managed to get around this issue, at least for my iOS or tvOS users, is that I don’t let them use the Plex app, all my apple clients connect via infuse. And when they connect via infuse it will never transcode any of the requested content.
plus 1
I came here from a Google search looking for a solution as to how to get my in-laws direct playing from me before realizing it’s not currently possible to accomplish server-side. In these covid times it’s not ideal to have to go into their house to set it for them as they are not really ones to “do settings”. Any sort of setup of anything modern tech and they just shut down and lose interest lol Getting them to merely do the initial login was a task in and of itself.
All this to say please add another +1 to the pile for this feature request. Seems like a weird one to not have had going from day one.
Just another bump, this feature is long overdue.
PLEASE!!! server side quality settings for all users… Thank you!!!
+1 from another customer on this. My TV does not think it’s local or something- my CPU is not fast enough to transcode 4k content, and I have to manually switch to original quality for EACH item I want to play back like that. This is unacceptable not to be able to set this.
I wish it was just set to maximum or original quality as default…
It can then be dropped if needed for a number of reasons just like it does now to transcode…
But to make the system transcode the stream just because the setting is set to 720 as default makes absolutely no sense. I have one user who does this everyday. I have tried to work over the phone to get it set correctly (ORIGINAL). But he isn’t computer savvy and I usually wind up just saying that’s good before I go crazy.
I can’t see why it is so hard for Plex to change the default setting for the clients.
It would make so many happy not dealing with this issue.
I checked a newer TV and it’s Roku Plex client DOES have the option to use original quality by default. I’ll have to check the others. It would still be nice to be able to force this setting per client from the server side though.
I know it can be set to default but it’s not installed that way, And Plex Client updates reset it back.
Oh that’s super lame then. I renew my objection.
thanks.
+1 on this request. Constantly prompting users to adjust their settings is a full time job.
+100 on this as a feature request!!! Why isn’t it set to Max/Original or Auto by default on the client, when we can set the “Limit remote stream bitrate” on the server itself.
ACKNOWLEDGE US! This is the stupidest problem with the easiest solution. There are no technical limitations.
Plex doesn’t care about it’s users…
If you were Ad dollars they be all over you trying to keep you happy.
Just to clarify because there’s a lot of comments on this thread and sometimes the transcoding triggers aren’t clear.
If a client sets itself to “max” or “original” for remote streams and is connected to multiple remote servers, the server settings for stream bandwidth per server would still regulate any client connections and transcode if the video file they wanted was above the server bandwidth thresholds. Correct? So as long as server admins set their thresholds appropriately client setting shouldn’t matter for the server - only for the client who might want to manage incoming data limits.
Follow up question … if 3 people tried to stream a 10mbps file from my server and I have 20Mbps as total limit and 12Mbps as per stream limit which scenario kicks in:
- First person gets full quality, second person starts gets full quality, 3rd person starts and everyone gets transcoded to 6.6Mbps
- First person gets full quality, second person gets full quality, 3rd person gets rejected
- First person gets full quality, second person gets full quality until 3rd person starts and then only 2nd and 3rd get transcoded to 5Mbps each
- Some other variation
Just trying to understand what happens to clients with those thresholds setup on my server side because I wouldn’t want to tell them “go ahead and set to original” if doing so might mess up another server owner.
Edit: Just for clarity - I rarely have more than one or two people streaming remote so my settings are expecting a single remote stream most of the time. Depending on the answer to above it might be feasible to set total and per stream thresholds to the same number and let people get their “full quality” based entirely on number of streamers and video bitrate?
Wow really! I came here hoping to find a solution but it seems that Plex chose to ignore this request and turn a blind eye to it even though it has been 5 years since servers Owners with Plex Pass have asked for it in every single reply to this topic, great Job ignoring your users Plex
You’ve created a wonderful application but you failed to satisfy customers and their needs

+1 for this request also!
Users are used to interfaces like Netflix, Hulu …
The clients only need to see the movies and just a tiny but of settings! It’s frustrating having to explain to each client how to set the remote quality! Why shouldn’t it just be original by default! I mean at least i should be able to control it from the server and not the client side.! Netflix doesn’t even have these options cuz it just complicate things ! You keep adding tuns of features everyday, how about you make this feature available to us servers runner or whatever we’re called Lol. I feel like you need to make it as easy as possible on the client side. Just hit play and everything works that’s what clients are used to.
Pls for the love of god just make it original by default already this thread has been going on for years now ! I mean non of your employees have even replied to this thread! Ugh
Just another bump here - I just moved into a new spot and I can handle up to 900Mbps (~80MBps actual throughput) up/down, yet all of my connections are coming in around 720p / 4Mbps. My friends are OK with the streams, but I’m not, because it adds extra workload to my server to transcode the video stream.
