Forced Subtitles Detection

+1

Nothing new to report yet. It is in the backlog but it has not been prioritised high enough yet.

Thowing in another +1 for this. It's the only real issue I have with Plex at the moment.

Good news everyone. Forced subtitles are now supported in the latest PMS (which for the moment is only available for Plexpass members).

no way! tremendous news, heading off to download ;)

How are they enabled? Having loaded the latest PMS, under playback options for one movie, I still see only "No Subtitles" or "English." Should there be a "Forced" option or similar?

All I know is that Elan added support for it. Hmm. Lets try to figure this out. I know that none of the clients today show if the sub is forced or not. But I assume that if a movie is scanned in, and one of the subs is tagged as forced, that one is selected if the language of the audio track is english and has a forced english sub. Can you check if that is true. I assume you need to reanalyse a movie with forced sub to check if this is correct.
BTW, which version of PMS are you using?

PMS version is 0.9.7.16.461-9823e24. as for the subtitles, i've never loaded them separately: my understanding was that they got pulled from opensubtitles.org or something similar?

if that's how they get enabled, however, i'm fine doing it, i was just hoping plex would same me the effort as it does in so many other areas.

I am unsure if subs from opensubtitles has the forced tag. And if it got that tag at the site I am unsure if it gets fetched from that site into Plex as "forced". What most in this thread is asking for is the embedded subs which has the "forced" tag.

Just downloaded the latest PMS update and one of the features was forced subtitles, still can’t figure out how to enable it though???

It is always enabled.

It is always enabled.

Brilliant, thanks.

Does it need a certain version of PMC or will any of the newer updates work with it?

Just tested it and it works perfectly

Fantastic work guys, plex just got a bit better.

How exactly did you make it work? Download a forced subtitles .srt file or similar?

No, I have all my library as uncompressed mkv files and when ripping I saved all the English subtitle options, I new I would need them later on for some films.

I don’t know how or if it works with mp4’s as I don’t have any.

It’s a great feature though as I have quite a few war films etc and there is always a bit of german speech hidden in them.

For now only embedded forced subs are supported.

Anyone been able to get this to work with the Roku client? I've been trying a couple different files tonight (MKV w/PGS subs) with forced subtitles. Can't get them to show up on the Roku. Using PMS Version 0.9.7.28.33. Movie is Life of Pi, ripped with MakeMKV, compressed with handbrake, subs remuxed with MKVToolnix on a mac. I verified there were forced subs with BDSup2Sub on the subtitle file itself.

I've read through that topic. Haven't happened upon any information that gives me a fix. Thank you though. I've tried multiple different tweaks in pms, the roku client, and the file itself. I guess I'll need to be a bit more systematic about it. I do typically include two sub files, one indicated as the default track. (I also play movies via a WDTV player, that I don't believe reads PGS subs, so I also need a VOB export). Although for my test file that I've been playing with, I've just been including the one PGS file.

I'll try a different movie and play around with it some more. Otherwise, I'm left to hardcoding/burning just the forced subs and then removing them from the overall subtitle file.

As a follow up to my previous post/question - still haven't been able to get forced subtitles to display. But I want to make sure I'm preparing my MKV's properly.

I'm assuming that unlike a disc player, plex will not recognize forced subtitles out of a standard subtitle track (that has subtitles for both the english and non-english part of a movie), and that the forced subtitles must be in their own separate track and that the entire track must have a forced flag, is that correct? I've tried it both ways, to no avail, but still want to verify that is the correct setup.

Then as far as knowing that plex is recognizing the forced subs, I should see that track selected instead of "none", correct?

So even without PMS for some reason not seeing the forced subs, I could simply select the appropriate subtitle track within PMS then it would always play. Not a terrible workaround if that is what I have to do.
