Forced Subtitles Detection

Sure enough, the default flag is marked.

Does anything there look suspicious to you?

I wish I knew what was causing this... :-(

Update:

I may have found the settings I need to change, although I don't know what I need to change them to.  Under the Language tab of Plex Media Server settings I didn't have "automatically select audio tracks" checked.  And, under languages for audio and subtitles, it was set to prefer the first language in the drop-down menu, which most certainly was not english.

What are your settings on that page?

I believe these are the defaults. PMS version 9.8.6... but that shouldn't make a difference.

If I changed anything on this page it was a long time ago.

I didn't touch that page when I installed Plex.  As I said before, the top checkbox was unchecked, and each of the drop down boxes defaulted to the first value.

Thanks for letting me know what you had.  I'll try removing and re-adding a video to see what it defaults to with those settings.

I would like to revisit this issue. Are forced subtitles available for external subs yet? Is there a naming convention like "Movie (1999).forced.eng.srt" or similar?

There is no naming convention for external forced subs yet. It needs to be embedded in an mp4 or mkv and tagged as forced in the metadata.

To jump on this topic....  is that in the works to add external forced subtitles?  I am about to redo my rips of my dvd's/blurays because I have moved to plex full time.  I kind of want to clean out my mkv's this time and just have audio (5.1 ac3) and video and let plex handle everything else now that sync will handle my mobile devices.  I don't really use subtitles but having it automatically show up for those films that have parts with a foreign language would be really useful.  Would be even better if those movies were tracked in the plex db automatically and would just download a srt with the rest of the metadata when it detects such a movie.

+1 to this. At this point, there are only three real problems I have with Plex: 1) subtitles (particularly piping Plex through a Roku), 2) sync issues with Plex mobile and 3) issues upgrading from version to version.

Of those, subtitles are the only real issue that affects me day to day. The problem for Plex, I think, is that forced subtitles are not always that easy to retrieve from opensubtitles.org.

That's exactly what I am searching for...    Why is there no naming convention ?

Easy job for the programmers of Plex...  And very useful...   If "forced.de.srt" then Play SRT.forced  WITHOUT manual need to activating it. It activates automaticly ! :-)

(You can select of course to    NONE)

Why? Well they have prioritized other things unfortunately. That is life, we sometimes have to wait a long time until it is developed, even if it looks like an easy fix.

Hey everyone, I just browsed through this whole thread and I am really confused so I was hoping that someone might be able to put this all in to a single post as to what has to be done with the media itself as well as Plex Server and if anything needs to be done on the client side as well.

I am not able to get this to work for the life of me. I am testing it out with Star Wars Episode 4 (the Tavern Scene) as well as X-Men First Class and I get nothing. I am ripping my movies with DVD Fab then converting them to MKV Files with Make MKV, I checked both of those movies and I have many subtitles listed in the web based players drop down but none of them say forced.

What am I missing?

The actual MKV files that you create must have tagged subtitles inside the file. So when you create the MKV with MakeMKV you have to choose which sub should be the forced one. Before remuxing it.

I am unable to get forced internal subtitles (SRT format) to display automatically in either Chrome or the Windows PHT.  Both correctly show "English SRT Forced" in the subtitle dropdown box, but the subtitles are not selected automatically.  The XML shows the forced flag as "1" and Mediainfo also shows the forced flag, however the forced track is not shown as "selected" unless I manually do so.  The only wrinkle I can think of is that I have two versions of this paritcular episode (720p and 1080p).  However, both have forced flags as well as several regular English and non-English subs.  Interestingly, the PHT log indicates that the forced subtitle track is being selected, however the text does not appear.  In contrast, if I manually choose the forced subtitle track, it appears correctly.  When I force a transcode, I see the same behavior.  In addition, then I choose the forced subtitle manually, the log includes messages that it is not remuxing due to an embedded SRT subtitle.  In all cases, the UI shows no indication that a subtitle is selected, and no text is visible, unless the forced subtitle is manually selected.

I have attached my PHT and Plex Server logs as well as the XML for the test file.

Server version and settings:  I tested with 0.9.10.1 and I set the default audio and subtitle language to English.  Subtitles are automatically displayed with foreign audio (tested as working) but I have the option to automatically select audio tracks disabled.  It chooses the first track in the MKV.

Is your subtitle language settings in the server set to “Shown with foreign Audio” ?

Yes, I have "Shown with foreign audio" selected.  However, one of the Plex developers stated that "we auto-select forced if “We find a forced subtitle stream in the same language as the selected audio track.”  In this case, it's a forced English subtitle with a default English audio track.

Please post your Plex Media Scanner logs from immediately after you add a new file with that has forced subtitles to your library.

Can I just clarify some things on this, since I've read the thread and need to make sure some things are still relevant..?

I'm referring to DVDs at the moment - haven't got to my blu-ray yet - need to make sure I'm doing the right thing before I delete all the VOBs off my server.  I'm starting to convert about 1500 DVDs to MKV so that Plex can handle them.  I'm not compressing them.

What I'm aiming for - which I suspect others may be too - is that when I play a movie I want it to play using the same options as if I'd put the disc in the player (assuming you go straight into a movie and not into setup menus).  That includes automatically playing the movie in its intended language but displaying English subtitles, if that's how it was intended, but that's for another time.  Mainly its for forced subtitles automatically showing.

I appreciate that in technical terms it's not that simple, but it would be great to get to that point (especially when I'm watching a movie with foreign dialogue in, and I don't know whether it's supposed to be subtitled or not).  Theoretically, if a supermarket DVD player can pick out and play forced subs, and things are ripped properly, it shouldn't be impossible.

What I'm doing.  This example is specifically for a Region 2 version of Inglourious Basterds (2009), as I know it's got forced and full subtitles...

- In MakeMKV, open the VIDEO_TS.IFO from my NAS

- Select the main title only

- Deselect foreign audio & subtitles

- On the first selected subtitle track, give it the name of "English", make sure its MKV flag is "d" (default full subtitles) (in my mind, it is the default subtitles track, since if I pressed a Sub button, or muted the audio (Windows Media Center), I'd expect this track to be picked up)

- On the second selected subtitle track, give it the name of "English Forced", set its MKV flag is "f" (forced appears in the info box)

- Click the Make MKV button

When opening the resulting file locally in VLC, the subtitle track "English Forced" is currently selected.

When I copy the file to my NAS drive and rescan Plex, I get two subtitle tracks "English (VOBSUB)" and "English (VOBSUB Forced)", but "none" is selected.  I understand that if I change it for this movie, the change will be remembered for me (so long as I remember to change it before watching).

When I view on Android, I get two subtitle tracks just titled "English".  Again, "none" selected.

I've yet to try it on the full HT version, but I understand this behaves more as expected.  I've also yet to try it on the Chromecast (HT and Chromecast being my two main viewings).

My question is:  Am I doing this right?  And am I understanding this right?  Know I'm a bit late to the game here, but I'm trying to outline what needs doing before I leap in and convert my library.  I'd like to keep English subtitles (plus local and English audio), and want the forced flag to be picked up as expected.

I'd also prefer to have some consistency with the naming of subtitles in the interface, but I'm not sure what I should be putting in what dialogs when ripping.  I completely get the Plex philosophy of replacing a myriad of DVD/blu-ray menus and interfaces with one common system (and totally agree).

Also, a bit of a silly question, but whilst I'm experimenting, is there a way to get Plex to "forget" my settings for a movie, so if I update the file with a new rip I can check it as if I'd just added it?

Many thanks for any help - sorry it's a long post - I've been playing with many options

Has this still not been addressed? My media library is comprised entirely of MP4 files, all x264 + AC3. I don't have any embedded subtitle tracks EXCEPT when needed to display foreign dialogue. I'll leave that sub track (Tx3g format) and flag it as forced. Plex still will not display a sub track unless I manually enable it for each file.

Yes, I have "display with foreign dialogue" checked and all language settings/metadata are correct. Quicktime and iTunes will automatically display the forced subs as needed.

c'mon Plex team.

I believe these are the defaults. PMS version 9.8.6... but that shouldn't make a difference.

If I changed anything on this page it was a long time ago.

Thank you so much!!! For some reason my subtitle setting was "manual" so I wasn't getting forced subtitles. Hopefully this fixes it.

Should that change it?

I thought the "Shown with Foreign Audio" forces the subtitles (although I would have assumed a forced flag in the MKV file should set it regardless).

I don't want to automatically select my language, as there are foreign movies where I keep both English and the local movie audio, but tend to watch it in the local movie's audio (unless I'm feeling lazy).

I'd (personally) rather it adhered to the default and forced flags in the file, and save extra options like this for advanced setup.  That way, you'd get the same as if you'd put the disc in.  Or, you could set the flags to your personal preferences when ripping the file in the first place.

@Atrus

Hey, so i've been doing a lot of reading and I have set my subtitle settings to "shown with foreign audio" but my forced subtitles that I have set for foreign speaking in my movies still will not play. HOW DOES THIS GET FIXED???

If we are paying for a service then i find it disheartening that this has been an ongoing complaint/problem since the start of this thread in 2011... could somebody please help me out here???
