I have some movies with forced subtitles on my server and the forced subtitles are automatically selected for me. When someone of the managed users in my Plex Home wants to watch these movies, there is no subtitle selected, so they always have to do it manually. All users have the Auto-select subtitle mode set to “Shown with foreign audio”.
Does someone have the same problem?
Under the account setting for the managed accounts, what do you have set for the following (I realize you mentioned part of it already)?
The language needs to be set to your preferred language for both audio and subtitle language. Additionally, the audio and subtitles need to be properly labelled for language otherwise I believe Plex assumes English (so if it shows as Unknown, Plex defaults to English).
Additionally, if the subtitles were already changed, that will for the most part cause the subtitles to not change automatically.
Just because this is something that tends to be misunderstood (not saying you are, just want to clarify it), forced subtitles are meant for situations where the language of the movie/show are in one language, let’s just go with English and then there are parts where people are talking in another language, Spanish, so the forced subtitles will appear so the people understand the Spanish speaking parts but the rest of the movie does not require subtitles.

Do they all have the same language selected for both audio and subtitle language?
It’ll only work that way.
And it’ll only work automatically if the specific user hasn’t manually selected a subtitle on that movie/episode before. (can be tricky after quality upgrades, when number of subtitle or audio streams is different on the new file)
Me and my managed users all have the same settings:
We also tested it with a newly added movie, so no one manually changed the subtitles there. For me it automatically selects the forced subtitle but not for the other users.
Does the newly added movie have the audio and subtitle language properly tagged in it?
Is the above shown checkbox (in @shark2k 's screenshot) actually ticked (in all user accounts)? Without it, the settings below are pretty much useless.
Did you verify the language settings of your users by “Switching Users” in the web app? Or differently?
Yes, I switched the user and made sure that everyone has the same language settings.
How many different audio and subtitle streams are in the affected movies?
That’s is below 30, so in theory it should be working.
But it would be interesting to test it with a file that has only those languages in it, that are actually of use to you and your family. Maybe we are running into a bandwidth limit or something.
You can quite easily make such a test file with MKVtoolnixGUI
Just drag your original file into it, then clear the checkboxes of those superflous language streams. Then click “Start Muxing”.
I made a copy of the movie with only german audio and subtitles (normal and forced) and now the forced subtitle is selected for everyone.
But then I checked the original file with all audio and subtitle streams again and also my other movies with forced subtitles and suddenly the forced subtitles are automatically selected for all users.
Did you make those langauge settings only recently? Maybe the server/clients only needed a bit of whacking, to eventually contact plex.tv and refresh their account info.
I changed the Auto-select subtitle mode from “Manually selected” to “Shown with foreign audio” for all users today. I guess, you are right and it just needed some time to update the setting.
