Forced transition to new Plex version (formerly Preview) on Samsung Tizen TV

Hello!

I’ve just noticed that Plex Player on my Samsung TV got updated to a new version (formerly Preview version), and the option to opt-out of Preview is not longer available. I was using old version because the new one is not advertised as Plex player, and can’t be used with Amazon Alexa, which is the way I’m using it 90% of the time. Why decide to force us to update to the new version if it (at least) doesn’t have functionality of the old one? I’ve also asked for the ETA of this functionality, but there wasn’t one.

Best regards,
Davor

I am also not happy about this forced update to the next version.
My biggest problem is the dominant player OSD. It has been improved in this version, but the old OSD was much less intrusive.
Please make the OSD properly transprent and not dimming. Also, it should use less space and collapse further down.

I had to come out of preview as the newer version did not work properly and would not find my server. I now have the latest version whether I like it or not and again it cannot find the server at all.

I have issues with audio sync on some files in this version as well. My list regarding this has gone unanswered.

These types of forced transitions that, as far as I can tell, are not strictly necessary, just so you can effectively force an asthetic upon us, never bodes well for the customer of a company. This is the start of a very slippery slope. I wish more users were as agitated by this as I am. I strive for efficiency, which requires a reliable workflow. The current interface isn’t perfect, but the new one is literally a WIP and, as a dev of over 20 years, believe is NOT ready for widespread adoption. I’m sick of watching my fellow developers succumb to the temptations of making every one of your customers a beta tester. Google pioneered the concept…they hear from me FREQUENTLY about it and have lost thousands in business from me as a result. I’ve been slowly, but surely, cutting Google out of my life because I should be the one to decide when I beta test something…especially if it is something I’m paying for - GSuite, YT Premium, Plex Pass; I pay for software because I’d like to also be paid for the software I develop.

This seems to not matter to Plex anymore, just as it never really mattered to Google, or Amazon, or Microsoft. It’s a sign you’ve gotten so big and popular that you’re immune to legitimate criticism and the wishes of the customers who pay you because the inertia of the consumate mass will let you do what you want. This is about the time I start seeking or developing an alternative. Plex’s time may have finally come, since this is currently one of several unaddressed complaints from myself and others on this forum. I wonder how much of this forum they actually bother to read anymore? It doesn’t generate money for them, so probably not much of it. :man_shrugging:

5.xx is way faster than before, but I just hate its subtitles style. It’s awful, too bold and either too small or big. Why changing the perfect subtitle style from 4.xx? They should at least allow us to changing its style, not only size.
EDIT: I’m not a big fan of the new OSD.

My cover art looks terrible…very garish. Anyone else notice this?

Does anyone know how you can go back to the old version? I don’t like the new version 5.13, I want to return to version 5.1.0, which was completely fine with me. Where can I download it?

Here’s what I don’t like about 5.13 (compared to the old 5.1):

  1. There is no way to switch the appearance of the covers (I like it when the view is a list, not a tile.)
  2. It is not possible to delete the entire season of the series or the entire series, there is only the possibility of deleting a separate episode.
  3. Does not always display 16: 9 widescreen movies correctly, there are black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

These problems were not present in the early version 5.1, everything worked correctly there.

I see a lot of folks talk about aspect ratio. I’ve never had that issue. One of the frankly weird things I’ve seen people complain about is not being able to stretch letter box, into weird proportions to fit a 16x9 ratio. So my question to you… are these black bared movies really 16x9? You say not all. Maybe you should check the movie info.

Frank

The same TV series or movie is displayed differently in version 5.13 and in version 5.1. In version 5.1 it comes without black bars at the top and bottom (full screen), in version 5.13 there are black bars at the top and bottom of the screen and the image is distorted (compressed).

I had to ask. Can you provide logs, and movie info. The Plex people need something in order to check a bug out.

Frank

I will provide information about the video as soon as I get home (I’m out of the house now).
Log’s? - I just don’t know where to watch them, I’m not a very advanced user.

In fact, people from Plex just need to return the button to the settings, which was before. It seems it was called “Back to the old look” or something like that.

Hello!

I would not mix the complaints about new looks with missing functions and bugs. Visual changes are subject of personal preference (like fonts, OSD design etc.), but stuff that were included in the old version (and missing in the new one) and bugs are something that makes Plex less functional (or not functioning at all).

Besides missing Alexa support, I’ve found out that, after TV Show episode ends my Plex Server’s CPU usage goes to 100%. After examination, I’ve found out that it’s the Plex Transcoder that uses all the CPU power. Why would Plex Transcoder start to work after the TV Show episode has ended? It has to be a bug, because I wasn’t experiencing this kind of behavior with the old version of Plex for Tizen. After I’ve noticed this, I’ve updated Plex Server too, but it didn’t help.

Also, sometimes I notice that subtitles start to lag - one line of the subtitle is being showed for way too long. When this happens, I can’t use Stop, Pause, Fast forward/Skip or back, and the only way to go back is to exit Plex Player completely (holding down back button). After restarting Plex player, subtitles are in sync.

I hope someone from Plex Team will notice these complaints and, at least, let us know they’ve seen it.

I have had a problem with the app finding the server ever since teh new version came live. The server is running on the same network, but the app cannot find it. Have tried deleting and re-installing the app and server but does not seem to make a difference.

With you 100%. Especially about Microsoft… haha Whatever their latest UI is is JUNK and most importantly there is such a needless competitive drive to get products out - you’re right - Apps are not completed.
