Free-form name and folder structure

It would be nice if Plex would offer the option to read media files with any name or folder structure. I had to write a C# program to rename my thousands of home videos to make Plex think they were episodes and seasons of a TV show or it wouldn’t show them, that is crazy. Just add an option to support free-form file names, folder names, and folder structures and just display the media files as they are found. The folder structure decides the organization, not fake seasons and episodes.

Well, why would they need to do anything special when they already have what it seems you want by using an “Other videos” library.

I use that for my home movies and it works just fine.

Use the tools provided and it usually works fine.

Thanks Elijah, I’ll check it out. What I read online said that I had to pretend my home videos were TV episodes so I did it that way. It worked but it was a huge pain.

@Elijah_Baley I’ll check it out too. I still heavily rely on Windows Media Center for my recorded tv, which only uses a single RecordedTV folder… Not Series/Season/Episode. Looks like it might be a good way to see WMC content without having to have batch files scan the RecordedTV folder every 30 minutes to relocate new recording so they are “visable” in PLEX. Thanks for the idea.

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (home videos can be organized as a tv-show with the personal media shows agent – or an other-video type library which works as described)
