Like many others I updated to the newest PMS version and it totally borked everything. I’ve been following the thread here So I recently updated my freenas box to 1.15.2.793_1 and i now cant get to the server setup page and it looked like we were getting answers but then they closed the thread and I was unable to reply that it did not fix my issue.
I’m running FreeNAS with no issues previously. I came home yesterday and fired up plex on my tv and got an error that I needed to update my server to at least a certain version (I don’t remember the exact number). No big deal I thought, I’ll just run the PMS updater script like I’ve done before and update since I installed PMS on my FreeNAS on the older jail system years ago and just kept updating it. So I did that and now my PMS plugin refuses to start. The jail will start, it says the service is running but when I click on the plugin to start it it will not start and the web interface will not load. I tried the “fix” in that thread and it did not work and I’m unable to reply to that thread since it’s been closed. Ok, so I figured I’ll just make a new server on the new jail system and rebuild my database. It’ll take some time to redo everything but at least I’ll have my plex back. After running into the issues everyone was having, I did the “fix” again in that thread and was able to set up the server, however it will not import anything but movies, will not load metadata, cannot play back movies from the web interface or any app on any platform, and after about a minute of the server starting I cannot edit any settings. After about an hour or so the PMS will just go down and become unresponsive.
I would prefer to fix my old instance since that’s all configured how I want it but I’m not against starting over as long as it works, which it doesn’t currently. Please, please, please I need some help here, I’m completely lost without my PMS!!!
Thanks
Quick update. I ran pkg update and pkg install -f plexmediaserver on the warden jail installation of plex and I got the server to start again on version 1.3. However I cannot play ANY files. I get a range of errors from Conversion failed A required codec could not be found or failed to install to Error playing video. I deleted and redid the iocage jail and added my movies but the metadata will not load and I cannot play anything on that either it just pretends to load and does nothing. Right now the iocage jail says it’s running and the plugin says it’s up but the web interface will not load at all. I’m banging my head against the wall here trying to fix this thing. Please if anyone can help I’m desperate. If I have to start my PMS over from scratch I will as long as it works. The supposed fix that was described in that other thread I linked above DOES NOT WORK for me.
I close the thread close the issue was resolved.
Please post you’re PMS log, but form the description it seems to be failed to download required codecs… are you perhaps blocking access to the internet?
And do you have VNET=on in the jail?
Here’s the logs for the warden jail that is somewhat functional. I just went to download them and found that the server was not responsive and had to reset the jail to get access to the web client.

Here’s the logs for the iocage jail which was completely not responding and had to also be reset to get these logs. Keep in mind this jail was created fresh and before even opening and configuring it via the web interface I performed the fix that was supposed to fix it and it’s still not working.

VNET is not on on either jail.
Please enable VNET and try the same thing again, VNET is required for PMS to fully work (the plugin does that automatically).
I enabled VNET on the iocage jail and now the PMS on that jail won’t respond at all. It says it’s running but going to the web front end is unresponsive. When I go to the shell to do a pkg install it can’t find the repositories. I’m still lost without my server, I don’t know how to fix it.
Can you please paste the exact error you get from pkg install or pkg update?
Also please post sockstat - l46 output.
Pkg update gives this:

I also get errors and security issues emailed to me daily from my freenas server and got this this morning:

1- You have dns issues!
No address record repository iocage-plugins has no meta file, using default settings
2- PMS is not running on that jail

I suggest you try to find some help first regarding the dns issues on freenas forums.
But maybe some hints:
Does the jail even have an IP? ifconfig should tell
Can you ping an internet IP directly? I.E. ping 1.1.1.1
It only started doing that when I turned VNET on. I just turned it off and restarted and I was able to do the update again fine. However, it’s still doing the same thing. No metadata and clicking on a video just has the video load infinitely.
One more update. My warden jail plex server began working but only on my LG webOS TV or the MacOS program. On the web front end, my android phone, or my adroid TV I get the failed to convert error. What could be causing that?
Edit: it also works on my fire sticks. I really need it to work on my TV and phone though.
You need to assign it an ip or do it via dhcp.
Both jails have static ip’s.
Still you can’t do dns queries, or ping an Internet IP.
You have network issues and until you solve those nothing will work properly.
The other clients must need transcode and the codec required need to be installed/updated which requires the jail to properly resolve dns and be able to reach the download url.
I would focus on fixing the network issues frist.
I only had network issues when you said to turn vnet on. Once I turned vnet back off I was able to run pkg update and install without issue but the issue with not being able to playback files persists. Once I turned vnet off I had no network or dns issues and no other device on my network has issues.
But you do need vnet on and you need to figure why intrrnet is failing that way.
Perhaps try DHCP.
I’m non vnet jail you share an IP with the host (it’s an alias set in he host interface) with vnet you have a virtualize network stack.
The jail is like a normal host in what matters to network.
So you probably didnt set it up probably.
I suggest you look this up in freenas or iocage docs.
I never used vnet before on my warden jail and that’s working except for my phone, TV, and web interface. I’ve been running it for like 8 years the same way and never had an issue until now so I don’t think it’s my network.
Having simular issues here so thought I’d chime in.
Same problem here, VNET on = no IP traffic, can’t even ping the plex server
VNET off = traffic
I’m not sure if you need all this steps in freenas , probably not, but this is from the iocage docs:
https://iocage.readthedocs.io/en/latest/networking.html#vimage-vnet
Regardless that wouldn’t be a plex issue, you might find better help on freenas forums to get that working!
The plugin creates the jail with vnet so you might also be able to look at what it does!
