FreeNAS server with Plex and Audiobooks

So my wife asked me today if I could put all her audiobooks on Plex. I told her I would look into it.

So is there a nice and easy way for me to setup this on Plex for her?

So not something people have done?

I’ve done this. There is a metadata agent for audiobooks I am using. You can find the metadata agents linked in this post here: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/277803/audiobook-agent-audible/p1

I am using the master repo. it has worked really well so far. You just need to make sure your folders are named properly, or in other words that your folders are named to match the books on Audible. Think of the Author like the artist and Books as albums. As long as the Author folder is named the same as the author on Audible and the Books are named the same as the titles on Audible it should pick them up easily enough. You may need to use MP3Tag editor to change author and album metadata on the files so the agent identifies them properly.

Alternately you can install the webtools (unsupported app store) and then install the metadata agent from there as well.

Guess need to look into it more. Not sure have knowledge to setup. Is there a well written guide?

Honestly, Plex is not the best for audio books because it really sucks at storing track progress.

The ‘store track progress’ feature itself is hit or miss, more miss than anything. Basically not even worth turning on…it’s that bad. I prefer just to pay for an audible subscription and sync my audiobook progress across all my devices reliably.

The convenience of Audible far outweighs anything I can currently accomplish via Plex. There is nothing I hate more than needing to mark down a track number and time and manually hunt down the track and skip forward when I want to listen to again. A shortcut for me was to screenshot where I left off, but it is cumbersome and worth the $15/month Audible subscription to me.

I’d happily pay for a monthly Plex subscription, on top of my Lifetime pass, if it could complete with Audible’s selection and had support for Amazon Echo devices like Audible does. Perhaps the Plex team can integrate with Audible via API or work on a partnership?

Here is a guide I just found. If you really want to try Plex for Audibooks then go for it: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/286947/audiobook-guide

Interesting that others seem to have success with the store track progress feature, while it has never worked reliably for me. I’m guessing resume works best with longer single file audiobooks than ones split up into smaller pieces, but the 90% completion rule still applies which wouldn’t make things really annoying for longer audio books.

I’ve just started using Plex for my audiobook collection. Got it all catalogued correctly and organized. However, the question I have is there no function to show what you’ve listened to versus what you haven’t? Like the “watched” function for videos? I have almost 400 audiobooks and I’ve probably listened to about 80.

Thanks!
