Fresh plex install hangs but continues doing some work on DB

Been using plex for years without major issues, but recently made some upgrades and during the process I decided against spending few days moving few million metadata folders (in hindsight, terrible decision), I wiped it and started up a new plex instance and let it create a fresh db without a ton of bloat I’ve gathered over the years.

for ref, state of plex appdata from a recent check i did

now I’ve got a fairly large library but it does seem a bit crazy. but lets ignore that, gone, poof, deleted. and no I dont back this up, trying to zip 4.5mil folders isnt going to end well.

I’ve got it all setup, with minimal metadata handling. however when it came time for nightly scheduled tasks it’d always hang and I had to restart it to get it back up and working. eventually pinned it down to database optimizations, as I understand plex takes db offline to do these, which makes sense, however it just kept going when left, had it left for 3 days at one point, currently I have it at over a day, this is after dbrepair.sh auto.

Enabled logs, however all services seem to just be halted aside from whatever its doing in background and not logging it. For a test I’ve tried killing the 5 relay processes it created at some point, those log fine btw, here’s a snip of the output,

db optimisation was issues around 17:14, with no logs to show for it. at 4:40am it somehow picked up some network int resets (another issue entirely, likely down to container running in host on my unraid rather than bridge)

htop inside container, just 3 processes at constant 100% cpu (minimal system impact but they’re doing something)

looking at lsocks just shows them keeping databases open.

Kind of lost, I’d prefer not to restart it all over again as its likely to just happen again if I do, I can only assume that me adding somewhat large libraries (that scan has no issues with, with no new metadata to add etc) is the fault but, it was managing just fine before on 900gb structure.

any help would be appreciated.

Your network adapter is going

Starting with the obvious:

1. Unraid host has static IP address assigned ?
2. Container is static IP or DHCP preassigned ?
3. Container in host networking mode or bridge mode ?

For the DB directory listing, please use ls -lah ( human flag)
It looks like a 10GB DB and 1GB blobs. This correct ?

Lastly,
May I have the actual ZIP file (PMS server DEBUG logs) captured about 3 minutes after server (container) start ?

Hey, thanks for response, the network thing will be my unraid mac bonding messing with it and plex being on host assignment

1. using host address, I think its a separate issue that I was going to solve after I got it back up and working properly, I do believe giving it a network bridge or giving it a unique ip will help with that

for db, yes 1gb ish main, it has 1.43 backup in there, that can be ignored.

where about are they located? only have txt’s in /logs, I can restart plex and get the zip from ui if thats what you’re after

edit; actually, is 1.43 backup ok… I cant remember now but i believe i pulled latest but then had some issues with playback tests and dropped down to 1.42, I assume it would’ve handled it fine but maybe the db is just out of sync with code?? am i talking rubish?

odd, its on ipv4 only

always has been afaik, aside from initial boot. but yeah swapped over to ipvlan and adjusted my bond anyways to be less “flappy” should sort those network resets.

so I guess back to main issue pms hanging when doing a db optimization task.

Something I’ve not tried, is doing bundle cleanup. and hmmm this seems like a lot, did delete a very large library I need to reorganize at some point.

took a minute or two at 50%, then jumped to 75% and stated its got 520217 media bundles to wipe.

looking at htop and drive usage, its fairly similar to what I’ve seen when pms wasnt responsive, I wonder if its just been trying to clean this up all along but not bringing db back up during the process. 3-4 processes using 100%cpu with these pyhon plugin filling a lot of other pids

I believe I’ve got your dbrepair script or very strange coincidence, am I right in thinking I want to run a debloat/vaccum or whatever to help this task or should I just let it be for now?

well it finished, so did the obvious, pressed optimize db and its gone.

here’s some logs, it got to 10% it seems then its just relay staying alive, eventually it’ll also die, thats what I’ve been seeing so far at least

As for Deflate, You should only need that if your DB is 50+ GB (obvious bloated from PMS 1.41.7 days)

Don’t run just VACUUM, run a full AUTO to reorganize it. VACUUM doesn’t put the records in order nor does it rebuild search indexes. (Auto is like ‘Sort+Vacuum+Reindex’ in one step)

Local storage, direct disk access, zfs raidz1 pool, 24/7 on, without spindown nvme.

Tried the repair, auto, vaccum prune purge deflate auto, in that order, it reduced the appdata size a bit, about 10gig but still hangs on db optimisation.

anything I should try? otherwise I think I’ll just go nuclear and start from scratch, during all this I’ve made a bunch of improvements to the performance so rebuilding basic metadata should be fairly fast. if so, can you reccomend known stable version? 1.42? heard and seen too many issues around new ffmpeg on 1.43

1. Go Nuclear
2. As you create each library section
3. AFTER it completes, run DBRepair “Auto” (that’s all you need)
4. Continue creating and “auto” until done.

wiped the appdata, kept the same 1.42 image, so far so good, 5 libraries added, changes made defo helped, finished main ones in a flash for basic metadata. surprisingly its the personal media libraries that took the longest but there was a ton of files it had to find metadata for itself.

just ran bundle + optimization from webui instead (script never had issues), so far so good. thanks.
