Gapless Playback In Plex

I just don’t get why this feature isn’t put into more of your players. It’s been, what, 3 years since PlexAmp launched? Why hasn’t the other players like the web player or PMP gotten it? It makes Plex development seem very unfocused when features like this are unused for years.

PMP has gapless playback. Might have been the first to get it.

Web can’t, it’s a browser limitation. To do gapless, the player has to be able to cache the next song before the first one finishes. Web browsers were not meant for that.

Then it was a bad example on my part.
PMP doesn’t have loudness equalization, so I assumed it lacked the gapless part as well.

Right. That is part of the audio improvements that also brought Sweet Fades. PMP did not get that improvement, but gapless is there.

I do think my overall point about development seeming unfocused is valid thought. Whether the missing feature is gapless playback or something else, it’s not enjoyable for the end user when a player is missing features for whatever reason. It’s really difficult to find out if something is not implemented because of platform limitations (as is apparently the case for gapless playback in the browser), or because it’s just not implemented, and may be or may not ever be implemented.

It’s also difficult to find a good documentation about what features the different players do support. Does the new desktop app support gapless playback? Sweet fades? Loudless equalization? I don’t know, because the supported features vary from player to player. I can probably find the answer by googling or browsing a bunch of forum threads, but that can take time. Maybe it’s mentioned in a thread about a completely different topic. Or maybe it’s not and I have to find out myself through trial and error.

I do get that Plex does support a bunch of apps and platforms, and that is makes it difficult for Plex as well. It is a bit frustrating to be a Plex user sometimes when this is the case.

I am (or was!) a great fan of Plex and use it mostly for music but also TV etc… I bought a lifetime pass. I had noticed the annoying gaps on pink floyd etc but assumed I could sort it out with some config settings. But now i have just got around to investigating and it seems there is no simple way around the gaps (on OSx client). I was about to sort out my classical collection and maybe subscribe to Tidal, but having second thoughts now. Are there any alternatives to Plex that have better support for music playback (as well as supporting video/tv etc)?

I think the best bet is to work around the problem at source by making one big flac for the whole album. It would be nice if the client could be fixed, but i would want the client to know that this album should be played without gaps… I don’t want to have to tell it every time i play that album.
For now I am using shntool to join the flacs into one big file. (I did it in ubuntu but should also work on OSx i think).
Install flac and shntool and then, in the folder containing the individual tracks, run
shntool join -n -o flac *.flac
Plex sees the resulting joined.flac file when it scans and interprets it as a second copy of the album which you can play without any gaps.

Are there any clients for linux that do gapless playback that have a decent ui?

I am using OpenPHT for Windows on my NUC to get gapless and bitperfect (WASAPI) music playback. Its also available for Linux, RPi, MacOS etc.

The OpenPHT project seems to be abandoned, but i use it only for music playback.

Audacious on Linux does gapless playback

Voting for gapless playback in plex. The gaps are very annoying playing Blade Runner soundtrack.

The only thing keeping me from buying Plex premium is the fact there is no gapless play. Maybe this also is true for others ?
I have tried all formats mp3, Flac, Wac and Wma. If they want to make money, they should get their fingers out of … and work on this.

I found another solution, that works for my Receiver with dlna.
I installed Serviio version 10 (also free) and only added the music libraries. It will play wav and flac and this is gapless no problems when listening to my ripped cd’s
I only wanted the music on my dlna receiver (not on tv) so this is a great alternative for me.
However plex is superior when it comes to show movies and tv shows, so that is still my main movie viewer.

KodiPlexConnect does it. Running on linux (ubuntu) it even gets the 6-channel flacs rendered correctly. Yesterday listened to Beatles “Love” through in 5.1 surround, smooth transitions, no gaps, nice.

it’s crazy this feature isn’t still widely implemented on plex clients. I really pledge for it!

Another vote for gapless playback, particularly in the Roku app in my case. This seems like it’s easily fixable if the devs commit resources to it, and obviously a lot of us are asking for it. Lifetime passholder here—please help us out!

To get support for gapless playback in the native Mac (macOS) desktop app, please upvote this issue: Gapless playback for Plex Media Player on macOS

I’m in the process of moving my music collection from MusicBee to Plex, although I’m wondering if I’ve made the right decision. I find it crazy that we are still having these gapless playback discussions in 2020. I understand it might be difficult to implement gapless on all devices, but surely the Desktop apps for Windows and Mac should have it. Especially as it’s already been implemented for PlexAmp.

Another annoying thing is that gapless doesn’t work through chromecast from my Android phone. Yet with Poweramp it works fine.

Come on guys gives us these basic features and I’m sure you’ll get a lot more Plex Pass subscribers.

Have you checked out the new plexamp yet? gapless for desktop among other bells/whistles, all platforms. No casting yet but looks to be in the plans.

Yeah I have. I’m actually using it as my Desktop client as the main Plex app hasn’t got gapless. I just find it a bit limited.

I read somewhere that you could used to select Plexamp as the player from the main Plex app. Although I can’t seem to find how to do that. Maybe that was with the old Plexamp player though. Would be great if they could sort out gapless Chromecast for it.

It’s a shame there are these few fundamental problems, because I do love Plex. Fingers crossed they get them sorted soon.
