Gapless Playback In Plex

I’m also trying to get my MusicBee database running in Plex. It’s not really working as it should. Many MusicBee data is not imported into Plex. Even if you use Soundiiz for importing playlists, your database gets screwed up.

The lack of gapless playback on Chromecast is refraining me to continue to use the service too.

No. Plex clients do not have the ability to allow using an external player. Only Android Mobile has that feature.

@markwilliamsweb Actually you can, but you will need v. 1.1.0 of Plexamp which is the old previous build of the application on desktop. The way it would work is this:

  1. Launch Plexamp (1.1.0) on the computer you want to play music from.
  2. Using Plex (Desktop stand alone app, Web Browser, or Plex app on your mobile device), you can control Plexamp via your local network.
    • So, you can be in another room and still control Plexamp
    • You will see a “Chromecast” icon in your client and that’s how you select which client you would want to control. In this case, select Plexamp.
  3. But really, this works with all of the Plex clients when you’re on the same network.

Again, this is not yet supported in the latest redesign of Plexamp (v. 3.0.3), only the now outdated version.

If you can find a copy of the old version for your OS, I suggest trying them both out side-by-side and see which one meets your needs for the time being until v.3 matures a bit more and possibly makes its way out of the Lab.

I’m running PMP on my Windows based server and I don’t get gapless playback. What’s the deal? Do I have something set up wrong?

So, are they implementing it or not?

Why is this still not a thing? I have other music servers that do this easily.

And if you want this while jogging, just take a laptop!

I would gladly pay for a lifetime Plex Pass if gapless playback was a premium perk.

I am currently uploading and using two versions of the same albums where gapless is required. One as a single flac file for the proper gapless experience and another as separate flac files for each song for if I just want to listen to one or two tracks. So I am doubling the storage on my HDD and managing two separate libraries within Plex.

I can’t fault Plex and it’s great for my needs apart from this one, substantial, missing feature.

Can we get casting from PlexAmp PLEASEEEE

Why are even the plex apps talking to themselves not playing music gaplessly?

I mean, if I have a plex server on a NAS and a Smart TV plex app, why does this not work?

  • and the same question for the standard windows app.

Another vote for gapless playback on Roku. Really surprised this isn’t default, much less implemented at all.

I love the Plex experience but the lack of gapless playback kills it for me. I like that PHT supports exclusive mode but it needs gapless. And PlexAmp needs to support exclusive mode.

Has any Developer read this? August 2020 no gapless playback for music? Why do you even have a music tab??? Please get with the program. Gapless playback has been around for more than 20+ years and plex hasn’t touched it yet? Seriously? All those settings you offer in the Media Server and not one that addresses Gapless? Actually it should play gapless by default. I guess you don’t use your own product? Or you don’t hear the users? Or you don’t care? Or something else…
Good luck programming team. Hope you can figure it out.

It seems to me that the direction is to transfer the music sector to Plexamp which is an excellent starting point but as a reference player it is still lacking some essential points such as cue asio cromecast and DSP support

I’ve Plex Pass Lifetime and annoyed after finding that gapless is not implemented. What it takes to have this implemented? May be if any Plex employee could explain us what’s going on here. Gapless music is not something new. What is going on? I’m supporting you guys!

As previously mentioned, the ability to have gapless playback depends on the client. Gapless is already available in many clients such as Android and iOS. It is not possible on Web or Smart TVs.

Would it be possible to make a list of which clients that do support gapless playback and which ones that won’t because of platform limitations. That way we users don’t have to wonder if X client have it. Or rage at Plex for not implementing a feature that is impossible to add.

I know there’s a lot of clients, but still…

So then how it works for apps like Spotify or Amazon Music on an Smart TV where gapless works with no problem? are you saying it is impossible for Plex or is something that none Web or Smart TV app can do?

What Smart TV do you have? AFAIK, Spotify does not support gapless with their regular Smart TV app. It is supported on TV’s running Android TV, and so does the Plex app on Android TV.

Keeping this thread active. I just discovered this issue. I have been using Plex through a Roku for streaming movies and TV mostly. Started listening to my rather large collection of FLAC encoded albums, and heard a “click” or “pop” at the beginning and end of every track on every album. Then experimented with an album that I knew had tracks that seque into each other, and found a slight pause between those. Very annoying. This will keep me from getting the lifetime subscription I had been contemplating, and will make me look for a different platform.
