Gapless Playback In Plex

Update:

So a couple months ago I replaced my old receiver with a Denon AVR-S750H with HEOS baked in. I am happy to say that I can direct-play from Plex over DLNA, and it is gapless. I no longer play music with the plex app on any of my streamers (Roku, Shield, X-Box One) and now rely solely on the Denon. Unfortunately pre-existing Plex playlists do not appear to work over DLNA, which is irritating, but I can always create new ones with the HEOS app on my phone. I will happily make that trade for the ability to direct-play 24bit 192Khz flac files gaplessly over my Network. That is still no reason for Plex not to make all over their apps gapless compatible, of course.

Could some Plex employee answer when this is going to be fixed?

Please specify which clients you are asking about.

PS4 app, Chome browser on a pc running windows 10 would be my two.

Those are both browser based apps. Browsers do not support gapless playback, it’s a platform limitation. On your computer, try Plex for Windows, which I believe does support gapless playback.

It does not. Whenever a track ends, Plex for Windows ends the passthrough session which results not only in a gap between tracks, but also causes the next track to have a second of it cut off at the beginning because it has to re-establish a new passthrough session with the receiver.

A solution would be to maintain the session between tracks the same way you’re already doing when you pause the playback. During a pause, the app does not end the session so you can resume without any gap. If you could put this same mechanism between tracks (stream silence instead of ending the session), that should fix the problem.

Have you tried enabling Exclusive Audio in the player? The passthrough should not be getting reset.

I’m not sure if Plex for Mac is supposed to have support for gapless playback or not, but I can confirm that neither the default settings, nor exclusive mode seem to allow for gapless playback. In both cases the next track doesn’t appear to be cached at all, so when the first track ends there’s a short period where the next track starts loading before beginning to play.

Update: It still seems to fail even if the specified album has been downloaded locally.

how does that work? I can’t seem to find any option like “advertise as a player” in plexamp.

PlexAmp does not support being controlled. It can only control others.

yes, that is what I thought as well.
I was replying to this (admittedly old quote from OttoKErne) “Did you know you can use another Plex client to send queued up music to Plexamp?”

I don’t remember, but it’s possible a really old version of PlexAmp may have supported that. The current version definitely does not have it.

any options to have gapless playback on linux? player needs to be able to be controlled froma mobile or similar as it is a small headless linux server runnig PMS and plex player.
works pretty good, but the player on linux does not seem to like gapless and plexamp is not an option in this situation

There isn’t an official Plex client for linux at this time. There is hope that an official client will be available soon.

Thank you for the update
indeed, there isn’t yet. The “unofficial” (linked in previous posts in this thread) one looks pretty good, but has this nagging issue.

Yes, exclusive audio is enabled, yet at the end of every single track the player ends the exclusive session then starts another which results in cutting off some of the beginning of the next song.

I reported this here: Don’t switch audio source between tracks (NOT about gapless playback) - #3 by VarHyid and received no reply or any support or even acknowledgement of this issue since November.

While I have your attention, please also keep star ratings displayed when multi-selecting tracks. I constantly select multiple tracks I want to listen to based on their ratings, but now in the recent versions the moment I select the first one all ratings disappear. Also reported in a separate thread with no support/response.

are you aware of any dates or roadmap for it?

I know this reply is late to the party, but I wanted to say that Clementine is what I use in Linux for gapless playback. Still waiting here patiently for some solution for Roku (Plex Amp would be nice).

So it’s good that the Plex app on Android is gapless. And like the Plex apps on other Android TV devices, the one for Chromecast with Google TV also works.

Unfortunately, CASTING to the device from a gapless Android player (like Plex) is NOT gapless. (The gap is brief but definitely there.)

So for $50, the Chromecast with Google TV is an inexpensive solution when a display is available (home theater).

I don’t know if this is the right thread, but what is the current status of gapless playback on Roku?

I have a Roku 4K Stick (Roku Streaming Stick+) and I’m not seeing any “gapless” option when selecting music choices or audio settings. Am I looking in the right place?
