Server Version#: 1.27.2.5929
Player Version#: Latest releases on Roku, Android TV, tvOS
From what I have found, this is the general process when attempting to revert to an earlier version of Plex Media Server:
Stop Plex Media Server by right clicking the icon in the system tray.
Uninstall Plex Media Server through the Windows Settings > Apps > Select the app and Uninstall. Do not use any special software removal tools.
Either find the previous version of the installer in the “Updates” subfolder of my Plex data folder or download the version that I want from the repository on Github.
Run the exe for the installer that I wish to install.
Reboot Windows.
So my now on to my questions: In the downgrade process, is there any risk of breaking my current set up? Either by somehow corrupting the database, somehow messing up my metadata, or having to re-authorize my family members who stream remotely from me? Won’t the installer automatically try to update to the current version?
I do not intend upon going back too far in the version of the software, probably only to 1.26.2.5797. Since updating to 1.27.2.5929 I have been having deadlock issues every 7 days with the server becoming unresponsive until it is closed and restarted. I am currently working with a Plex dev to nail down the issue, I just want to be prepared in case I have to pull the trigger and actually do it. Any input from people who have successfully downgraded is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Anything is possible as computers are not perfect machines. But that is why you stop it as first step so nothing is being written to database while you are doing things as the writing process being interrupted would be the primary cause of DB corruption.
Back up the Plex Media Server folder after stopping and before you do anything else if you are worried.
What identifies your server is in registry and that identifies your server as the one being shared with your friends/family
it will only update during Scheduled maintenance when enabled. Turn Server version updates to Ask me... in the General Settings os server before turning it off if you are doing this during the scheduled maintenance period
For safety, I would definitely at least zip up all the relevant folders after stopping PMS, like the Plex AppData and Program Files. I would also create a Windows Restore Point, and maybe run a backup script like this one:
I’m also considering downgrading right now to get out of this 503 deadlock issue people are having.
I have not downgraded my Plex server yet. Not sure that I even will. It looks like Plex is actively trying to resolve the 503 deadlock issue with several alpha versions at the moment.
I see… in my case I installed the new x64 version since I had the 503 error every few minutes. With this change I have certainly gained stability, but on the other hand the libraries take a long time to update. Thanks for your reply!
I had heard that someone else had that issue with the libraries. I think they solved it by adding Plex to the excluded list of Microsoft Defender. Not sure if it will fix your problem or not, but it might be worth a try.
