Genre Not Being Read In FLAC Files. Please Help

No, it does not. The tags which are embedded into flac files are put there by the official flac encoder. (And these tags are of course Vorbis comments.)

Ah ok that makes sense.

As you already mentioned upthread, the roll-up from embedded per-track genre to album genres seems to be a bit wonky. It’s a shame that Plex cannot handle individual genres per track, but we all know that’s a long standing limitation - but at least the roll-up should work. I guess waiting for a fix?

I do manually change some of the EAC generated tags, like your example of an album artist for a compilation CD with multiple artists. I enter “Various Artists” for the album artist in that case and it has worked well with my organization.

But the way I have always changed tags in Windows was to simply right click on the music file>properties>details. I could then enter changes there. I always assumed that I was modifying the tag data this way. Is that not correct?

So when I do that for a FLAC file, it does show a correct genre (I guess coming from the external FLAC encoder.) I have no idea what tag format it is, but it sounds like it should be Vorbis comments according to your post above. So if I understand correctly, my FLAC files are fine and I just have to hope that Plex gets modified to properly read FLAC genres and then apply them to the album level?

Ah, that’s filtering, not sorting. That’s why I couldn’t understand.

So far, I’ve never run into a problem with v2.4. I do most of my tagging with Picard (from MusicBrainz) and I think it uses v2.4 by default. (maybe I configured it that way, been a long time)

Yeah, I’ve had Puddletag configured to write v2.4 for years without a problem.
