I’m looking for a way of getting Plex to show the localized episode names for a children’s series. I get the episodes with file names like
Hau Hau, Piip ja Veli - 2017-10-17 - Omenapuuseikkailu.mkv
That is, - - .mkv
Despite my various efforts, the episode name Plex shows is always something related to the episode number - without any actions, the date string (here 2017-10-17).
I get no season info and don’t care about the seasons. The series is recognized as Ruff-Ruff, Tweet and Dave. Any ideas how I would get the localized episode names to show.
Well, that’s certainly not going to match with anything - unless you join TVDB and add it yourself.
In the case you’re not interested in doing that you should construct the directory structure in Plex Style and put them in a separate TV Show Library, Edit the Library and select Personal Media Shows (advanced tab) as the Library Agent - then hand edit each episode.
You’re probably going to find it’s quicker to add the entire show to TVDB than it is to Edit up a working version in Plex, but if you do that you’ll need to wait a few days for Plex to update the proxy server - and you’ll be hand editing anyway - unless you don’t mind waiting.
A TV Show Library/ <— Personal Media Shows Agent
…Hau Hau Piip ja Veli (2017)/
…Season 01/
…Hau Hau Piip ja Veli - S01E01 - Omenapuuseikkailu.mkv
…and so on…
There could be a better way, but I can’t think of one right now - maybe others will have other options.
Turns out this didn’t unfortunately do the trick. I used the exact settings, folder structure and file naming from the example, but I still get “Episode 1” as the title. Any ideas how I could fix that?
On an unmatched item in a TV Show Library ‘Episode X’ may be normal - that’s my guess.
Plex won’t grab that Episode Name from the file name - quite sure about that.
Edit (The Pencil) and put in a name.
There are shortcomings to having unmatched files - this is one of them.
If files are unmatchable you can expect to do some hand work.
You should have that ‘option’ no matter what, but if you use the correct Agent Plex won’t keep blowing your edit out of the water as it tries and fails to match an unmatchable item.
Check thetvdb for the correct episode numbers: https://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=294680&seasonid=620354&lid=11
For easier recognition you could name the series-folder in english (“Ruff-Ruff, Tweet & Dave”), although your Suomeksi naming seems to be correct. If you set the language of your library to Suomeksi, it will show all the information in Suomeksi instead of English anyway, if the information is present (which is the case here). That’s what I am doing normally (for the awful German language). The episode name is optional but could be kept for correct epidode numbering.
If you got folder structure and file naming right, it should be recognized correctly. If not, then there still is a mistake somewhere.
Edit: Since the show’s name is shown in english, you probably have set english as library language. That should be changed to Suomeksi then.
I’m not sure a language change is better than manual editing, but that is something for @mberg to decide I suppose.
If I were adding it I’d definitely use ‘Ruff-Ruff, Tweet and Dave’ - Didn’t know about that. Don’t get a chance to use Suomeksi much down at the Food Lion…
Sure, it is something to decide in general I suppose. In my opinion this is superior for foreign languages, since if the TVDB only supplies info in english, which happens, you at least get a match and all the metadata is fetched in english. Afterwards you could decide to add info at the tvdb in your language.
If this applies just to one single show then you are probably quicker with editing all by hand.
The issue may entail changing a language for one item - is that even possible?
Seems like an entire Library may need to be changed and that could be problematic. At least it would be for me here in West Virginia.
I think it’s pretty safe to say @mberg 's children speak better English than I speak Suomeksi. Could be an educational experience for 'em…
For one item it is not possible, it has to be the whole library. That depends in which language @mberg wants to display his other media. But no matter what the actual folder/file name of the show is, it’s metadata will be shown in the library language, there is no way around that other than manual renaming.
I am assuming that most non-english people want their metadata displayed primarily in their mother language and only in english if the mother language is not present at the tvdb. This might not be the case for everybody as people might still prefer english over whatever else.
Thanks for the interesting discussion. The audience (my daughter) is 2,5 years atm, so as long as they speak Finnish, she doesn’t much care about the title language She does know how to request a specific episode, though, so it would be nice to be able to track them down.
The root issue probably is that I don’t get season & episode info with new episodes, and would prefer not having to track them down, even when the episodes probably are mostly consecutive. Episodes from about a dozen series trickle in weekly, all have the same issue, and I’m not willing to allocate much time on organizing them. Especially since she mostly settles with the favorites I already know how to find
Depending on how they trickle in, it would be best to try to get them properly named right away (by SxxExx) before you feed them to plex, then the metadata is automatically fetched by Plex.
So what is the language of the library where you put “Hau Hau Piip ja Veli”? I guess english because otherwise you should have the Show Title shown in finnish as your title was correctly set and also recognised by thetvdb (because otherwise plex wouldn’t know that it’s “Ruff-Ruff, Tweet and Dave”.
The original library language is currently “Suomeksi”, and the show does get recognized. With the Personal Media Show Agent for a test library I actually lose the artwork, so that’s a drawback. The show selection is a very visual process over here
I might give @Coxeroni 's option a shot, for the currently most popular shows at least. There’s some up-front work to rename the existing dozens of files, but I suppose getting the episode numbers for new episodes would be then easy.

It is work, I have done the same for my kids shows. But it’s better to have the episode numbers right, because otherwise you have the wrong information for the respective episode, which might not bug your kid too much but gives you problems when selecting the right episode for her (and then bugs her too ).
I even added at least basic information to thetvdb myself (like correct german title and copied an episode summary) so that the right metadata in german is displayed. @JuiceWSA does the same there, it is fun to contribute
Edit: How would Filebot know the right episode number? Does it grab the title?
