Episode name display

I think I’m following correct show/season/episode naming guidelines but in the Season window, Plex is showing the whole filename as the episode name and I think it should just be showing the episode name.

For example, in my TV Shows library, I have a directory for Outlander (2014). Inside of that I have a directory named Season 01, and inside of that I have files named in this format: Outlander - S01E01 - Sassenach.m4v, Outlander - S01E02 - Castle Leoch.m4v, and Outlander - S01E03 - The Way Out.m4v

I thnk Plex should be display the episodes as Sassenach, Castle Leoch, and The Way Out in the Plex interface but it displaying them as the full filename. Am I missing a setting in Plex to properly show just the episode name?

Attached are screenshots of what the Season window looks like, a Plex episode detail window, a Plex file path window, the filename list of files in Plex, and the Plex folder hierarchy they are in. Am I missing something?

Did you manually fill in the Edit page where the title and Sort title are listed? If so, that is your problem. Change the Title to just the episode name and it will display correctly. The title and sort do not have to match the computers file name.

Sounds more like some embedded metadata in your m4v files and that information prioritized over the online metadata.
This will give you basically 2 options:

  1. Clean up the embedded metadata
  2. Decrease the source priority for Local Media Assets (TV)

No, it filled that in for me.

Where do I make this change at?

Settings - Server - Agents - TV Shows - TheTVDB

as well as

Settings - Server - Agents - TV Shows - TheMovieDB

OK, I’ve figured out that if I name the episode with the full Plex preferred name (which will make the filename correct), it also embeds this name in the metadata and that seems to override Plex’s parsing beyond the ability to overcome it. So now I will name each episode with just the episode name so the metadata is correct, then use a file renaming tool to update the physical filenames.

In this example, Metamorphosis is the episode name and I’ll rename the filename to Smallville - s01e02 - Metamorphosis.mkv

I think this will yield the result Plex understands. Extra steps but probably no other way to make Plex parse the episode name if the whole thing is in the metadata.

I don’t understand.

If filenames are “correct” when they are added to Plex, and files don’t have baked-in metadata, this multi-step process should not be necessary.

Did you disable (or lower) the Local media assets agent?

The files do have metadata, which is in the same name format as the Plex filename. When my ripping software asks me for the Title, I enter Show - SxxExx - EpisodeTitle, which creates the desired Plex filename convention. However, it also hard codes the Title the same way. I’ve just found some software that can batch edit the metadata and correct the Titles, so I should get the correct Plex display now since Plex will read the updated Title (now just the EpisodeTitle).
