Getting Playback error. Streaming this media is unsupported.

Hmm. You are correct. I’m getting this error again. It was working. Let me see what happened.

Even after upgrading Plex to version 1.9.7.4460 (Web Player is 3.29.5 ), this issue still exists where Internet Explorer 11 will not play .mkv or .avi files. Chrome and Firefox have no problems playing the same files.

I have the playback issue as well with IE 11, but what I’ve found is that the issue is with files that are encoded with AC3 audio. AAC audio plays fine. I am playing mostly MP4 files encoded with Handbrake and only use AC3 stereo or 5.1 audio whenI want the surround sound in movies. Older ones and TV shows for the most part are ok with AAC stereo.

I just checked one of the files I typically test with that fails (an .mkv file), and it is using AAC for the audio codec.

I re-encoded this test .mkv file, using an MP3 codec, and it still fails to play. So I am not sure the issue has anything to do with the audio codec.

Most recent server updates that I have applied still have not fixed this issue (currently on 1.10.0.4523). Commenting for visibility.

MP3 audio in a video file isn’t really ‘mainstream’ usage - that is certain.
Video files normally contain AAC-LC, AC3 2.0, AC3 5.1 or DTS of some flavor.
If you’re trying to play any of these in Plexweb - via that crappy browser (any) there’s your problem.
Plex Media Player doesn’t run in a Browser (any), comes bundled up with it’s own codecs (or whatever) it needs to play your media properly and is the preferred client…:
top of the forum/downloads/get an app

Enhanced/Advanced settings are available via PMP by accessing the TV View mode - go fullscreen by clicking the arrows in the box icon and away you go. Some difficulty actually controlling PMP may be mitigated to some extent by controlling it with your Plex Phone App - depending where and how you’re running PMP.

The Plexweb View (not full screen) provides mouse control - just like Plexweb.

I really only did that based on the feedback by Relayerman about their experience with .mkvs with AAC audio working, but AC3 failing. Since the movie I typically test functionality with was already encoded with AAC audio, for giggles I re-encoded picking a different option to see if there were different results.

Well, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure I guess. I’ve tried the Plex Media Player, and I don’t care for it. I like using the Web Player at work to stream background noise (mostly concert videos). I already have to use Chrome and Internet Explorer to do my job, so adding a 3rd browser to my desktop experience is a bit of a pain since it is competing for screen real estate, but it’s what I’ve had to accept until this issue is resolved (one way or another).

And until such time that Plex announces they have reached end of life for Internet Explorer, I’d expect them to continue to troubleshoot issues that began to occur streaming .mkv and .avi files following the upgrade to server version 1.8.3.4235 (which I originally posted about in https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1569339#Comment_1569339 in the Plex Web App forum), especially when MovieFan.Plex said the following on October 13 (in this thread, not my original thread in the Plex Web App forum).

“The problem is actually in PlexWeb. We haven’t found the fix yet but hopefully soon.”

I’m assuming these features are in response to someone else’s response, as I don’t believe I’ve ever really mentioned needing features more than I need a fix for IE, or word that Plex has abandoned support for IE as a browser.

There was a problem using IE11 that was fixed, but apparently there is another issue. I have brought this up to the devs and they are investigating. We have not EOL’d IE11, yet, and do hope to be able to fix this.

Given IE11 still accounts for nearly 9% of the desktop browser market, I’m glad to hear that.

I would love to use another/more up to date browser, and I do at home where I am fully in control of the environment, but at work on a locked down installation there is literally nothing I can do.

The fact that this is still unresolved is unacceptable. All your techs need to do is launch the plex web app from in IE11 from a Windows 7 machine to reproduce the issue. No need for all these log requests … plex web is broken in IE11.

@romeovoid - This is my opinion, I do not work for Plex.
That being said,

  1. It’s only been about a month since they last released code they thought fixed but didn’t. @“MovieFan.Plex” was kind enough to keep this thread apprised of his actions.
It takes time to fix bugs, even when reproduction is possible. (I’m not saying easy - because, let’s face it, setting up a system. in an ecosystem as large as Plex’s, to use Win7 and IE11 for a relatively small group of users that have not yet updated from an operating system that Microsoft itself ended mainstream support for in 2015 isn’t “easy”)

  2. I as a plex user have seen SO many more features and issues that I believe should have been fixed more than this.
Feature requests that have existed for years. Bugs for months or longer.
The only time this bug might even affect me is at work, which, honestly, though I don’t use Plex on my work computer, my company sure wouldn’t be happy if I was trying.

With the way Plex operates, to save time and money, since Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 7 in 2015, Plex could very well say 'sorry - Windows 10 is now the base Windows operating system technology we will support"
As Moviefan.Plex pointed out, at least as of a month ago, they’ve not yet reached that point.

I have my plex movies working with my tv and my network connected laptop, but when I sign in on my iPad I get this “streaming this media is unsupported” error. I just finished trying the Plex Dance. Any suggestions?

I also get the media unsupported message on my iPad. Was the fix ever found?
